An Italian-flagged ferry with 762 people on board ran aground early Sunday on an islet off Corfu island at the Ionian Sea in western Greece, Greek authorities said.

There were no injuries or water on an alarming level on the vessel Europalink, which safely reached the port on the island later, the Greek Coast Guard said.

From what I can make out, Minoan Ferries Europalink ferry hit rocks off Peristeres islet, north of Corfu, while servicing the Patras-Igoumenitsa-Ancona route and managed to make its way safely to Corfu port. No injuries reported.

The captain and lieutenant of the passenger ship Europa Link were released after facing a Corfu prosecutor on Monday, after the Italian-flagged vessel struck rocks northeast of the Ionian island late on Saturday under yet-to-be determined circumstances.

The ship, which was carrying 693 passengers on the Igoumenitsa-Ancona-Trieste route, suffered two cracks in the hull.

There were no reports of injuries aboard the vessel, which is part of the Minoan Grimaldi fleet.

The Italian-flagged ferry boat "Europalink", which crashed into an islet off Corfu early on Sunday morning but whose passengers were evacuated safely at the port of Corfu, has two large cracks on the side and several smaller ones, Port Authority officials at this Ionian island said.

The ship was doing the Patra-Igoumenitsa-Ancona route, with 692 passengers, a crew of 70 and 306 private cars, when it crashed into the islet of the Peristeres group NE of Corfu for unknown reasons. Passengers were put up in hotels, while authorities will be trying to turn the ship at its moorings to clear it of the cars still inside.

Water is being pumped out while private divers will be conducting more detailed checks on the damage.
