Seven applications for a total of €126.7 million in EU aid to help Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria cope with the aftermath of natural disasters in 2013 and 2014 have been approved by Parliament. The Greek island of Cephalonia suffered a major earthquake, of a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale, followed by a dozen aftershocks, in January and February 2014. The earthquake left some 3,000 people homeless.The EUSF was set up in 2002 to help EU member states and countries preparing to join the EU that are hit by natural disasters.
