Prominent Brits Express Support for Greece in Turkey Standoff

Twenty-five prominent academics, authors and politicians called on the British government to express its “clear support” for Greece and Cyprus over the increased tensions in the eastern Mediterranean caused by Turkey’s refusal to accept the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, in a letter to the editor of The Times, published on Monday.

The letter also urges NATO member-states to condemn Turkey’s drilling activities, instead of maintaining a policy of equidistance.

A couple of yachts had problems yesterday, the Lady C had to be towed out of Schinia Bay, Ithaki, after scraping a rock and developing a hairline crack in the hull; the Marilena suffered mechaical failure and lost ability to use sails in Lourdas Bay and had to be towed out. No injuries in either case and no marine pollution. Both boats awaiting repairs and fitness to sail certification.

Ryanair cancels flights on fresh UK quarantine restrictions

Ryanair is to cancel almost one in five flights from its September and October schedules after a drop in bookings in the last 10 days, as Covid-19 cases have increased in Europe, leading to fresh quarantine restrictions.

Europe’s biggest carrier said forward bookings had “noticeably weakened” and it would take 20% from its capacity to reflect demand, mainly cutting flight frequencies rather than routes.

Ryanair said the biggest cuts in its flight network would be to France, Spain and Sweden, as well as Ireland, which has imposed tight quarantine rules.

Fines being mulled as land registry completion lags

The completion of the project to record all of the country’s properties in a national cadastre is moving at two speeds, according to data from the Hellenic Land Registry.

As a result, the Environment Ministry is mulling the imposition of fines against negligent property owners.

More specifically, so far only 33% of the country has been been covered.

Tax returns are trickling in

The authorities have granted a one-month extension for submitting tax returns on earned 2019 income to August 28, but for many taxpayers, holidays get priority. Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IAPR) data show that the rate of submission has actually slowed down.

Two weeks before the deadline, over 700,000 taxpayers have not filed returns.

Protect beavers in law and let them populate England’s rivers, experts tell ministers
‘These ecosystem engineers could help us tackle issues like water security, floods, pollution and loss of wildlife’

Beavers, which were hunted to extinction in the UK more than 400 years ago, are valued for the downstream flooding-prevention properties of their dams and wetlands.

Threat to kill wild boar that stole nude bather's laptop prompts outcry
Berlin officials say Elsa and her piglets pose a danger and may have to be ‘withdrawn’

A wild boar that has become a frequent visitor at a lakeside bathing resort in Berlin is attracting a growing band of supporters following authorities’ suggestion that it could have to be killed.

The animal, nicknamed Elsa, has earned something akin to celebrity status after a series of photos of it and its piglets stealing a nude bather’s laptop at Teufelssee lake in west Berlin went viral this month.

The owner of the laptop was captured in bare-bottomed pursuit of the boar, which later abandoned its booty, presumably having discovered it was not edible.
