Woman living in van gives up her 320 pet rats

A woman living in a van in San Diego with her pet rats has agreed to give them up – all 320 of them.

Authorities in the California city found rats had clawed into upholstery, burrowed into the seats and gnawed the engine wiring, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Feeding ducks bread: Viral sign sparks anger and confusion

he Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said it was fine to feed small amounts of bread to ducks but people should also feed them sweetcorn, porridge oats, peas and bird seed.

"Just like us, birds need a varied diet to stay healthy," said Tony Whitehead from the charity.

"Although ducks and swans can digest all types of bread, too much can leave them feeling full without giving them all of the important vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need.

"So, although bread isn't harmful, our advice is to only feed small amounts to birds."

Swan Support, which rescues swans, ducks and geese, said many were starving because people had stopped feeding them bread in recent years.

They blamed a campaign called Ban the Bread, which was started by a company selling bird food.

"They wanted people to buy their food and that's where it all started," said Wendy Hermon from Swan Support.

"We were picking them up dying everywhere."

She said flocks of birds had become established in certain areas because of people feeding them and they had become reliant on this food supply.

"It's absolutely fine to feed bread. Bread has been fed to swans, ducks and geese for hundreds of years," she said.

However, she said people should only throw in as much as the birds ate, so there was no excess bread left behind to decay.

Might depend on the type of bread? JMO but I'm not sure some of it is any real good for humans.

Ghost nets: Tackling a silent killer of the seas

Jannis Athinaios is preparing to sell his merchandise, an assortment of fresh red mullets, red snappers, white sea bream and blunt-snouted mullets, at the sun-washed port of Nea Makri, a coastal town 25km northeast of Athens.

For 31 years he has been fishing in the South Euboean Gulf, mainly at night, heading to Nea Makri's port at noon to sell his catch, either to local restaurants or his many loyal clients.

"I use small nets," Mr Athinaios says. "Occasionally, I lose some of them, but nothing special - about 10m (32ft) per year, which costs me about €20," he says.

But imagine those lost nets scaled-up to the size of the giant nets used by ocean going trawlers.

"These big boats use nets over 45m in height and 800m in length, which may cost €5,000-€6,000 or much more," says Mr Athinaios.

When those nets get lost at sea, they become ghost nets, an expense for fishermen and deadly for marine life.
