Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8814 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1345 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1217 USD   $1 USD = 0.8915 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7016 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5876 €UR
1 €UR = R21.9288 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0456 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Breakthrough Alzheimer’s blood test could detect disease 15 years before symptoms emerge

A simple blood test can detect Alzheimer’s up to 15 years before symptoms emerge, with experts claiming it could “revolutionise” early diagnosis of the disease.

Swedish trials found the test to be as accurate at detecting the signs of Alzheimer’s as painful lumbar punctures, and better than a range of other tests currently being worked on.

Experts say it could pave the way for a national screening programme for the over-50s, and that current treatments could work better with the cases picked up earlier.

Greece ups child benefits to fight fertility crisis

Greece on Monday said it would increase child benefits to combat a fertility crisis that has seen the population decline by 3.5 percent over the past decade.

Ministers said, starting in April, an estimated 300,000 families would benefit from the initiative that applies to children born from January 1, 2023.

The one-time benefit for one child will be increased to 2,400 euros from 2,000 currently. Families with two children or more will receive up to 3,500 euros.

Conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has made population decline a top priority after winning a second four-year term in June.

Zakynthos town left without water as leak being investigated

Residents in the capital of Zakynthos have been cut off from the central water supply for more than 10 days as authorities on the Ionian island look for leaks to explain how petrol was detected in the water coming out of people’s taps.

Ongoing investigations by the local water and sewerage company have not been able to locate how the fuel got into the system so far, but, according to state broadcaster ERT, they have turned up myriad other problems on the antiquated network.

In one instance, repair crews that have been digging up sections of the water pipeline across the town found three holes that were allowing water from storm drains to seep into the drinking water system.

Until the source of the original leak is found, water is being supplied to the town’s residents and businesses by truck.

Greek perceptions towards Islam have become more negative in the last 15 years, new poll finds

In 2009, Public Issue investigated, for the first time in Greece, the attitudes of Greeks towards Islam, the social perceptions of the concepts and symbols associated with the Islamic religion, the degree of knowledge and familiarity of citizens with the Islamic tradition, as well as the existing social beliefs regarding Islam-West and Islam-Greece relations.

In the last two decades, with a turning point in 2016, there was a rapid increase in the migration flows of Muslim populations to Greece, mainly from countries in South Asia and the Middle East. As a result, in the last 15 years (2009-2023), social attitudes in Greece towards the Muslim world have changed dramatically.

Greek public opinion, generally following the pan-European trend, treats the Muslim world clearly more negatively or even hostilely.

According to the findings of the survey, the Egyptians (54%), the Palestinians (44%) and the Syrians (44%) are the nationalities most liked by Greeks today. The positive differentiation of the image of the Egyptians is not only due to the traditionally friendly relations between the two countries but probably also to the recently upgraded diplomatic relations.

In contrast, the nationalities with the lowest level of sympathy are Pakistanis (22%), Afghans (22%) and Iranians (30%). An intermediate position is occupied by the Israelis and the Turks, recording equivalent sympathy, 35%.
