'Sadistic' man caught on CCTV pushing dog to her death in icy River Wear in SunderlandA man who killed his pet dog by pushing her into an icy river has been jailed.Stephen Peveller threw the 12-year-old Pomeranian against railings next to the River Wear, in Sunderland, leaving her injured and struggling to get up after banging her head.The 48-year-old then put her through the railings and pushed over the edge of the river to her death.Peveller, who has a previous conviction for child cruelty, has been jailed at Newcastle Crown Court for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal which he had claimed he needed for emotional support.

Epidemiologists investigate two leptospirosis deaths on CorfuThe deaths occurred in the northern village of Karousades. On Friday, a man from the village died from the infection shortly after being admitted to hospital. His was the second death from leptospirosis since May. In a third case, a man was transferred to hospital in Athens in a critical condition but is now out of danger.Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease carried by many animals, mainly rodents. It cannot be transferred from person to person but only through contact (through the mouth, nose, eyes) or consumption of water contaminated with urine from an infected animal.Weil’s disease is the most severe form of the infection.
