Smoking ban among new laws scrapped because of surprise election
With the shock announcement of a surprise election on July 4, a number of key laws currently going through Parliament are likely to be scrapped.
Parliament will be dissolved on Thursday, May 30 for six weeks until the election, which means there's only a limited amount of time for laws to be passed before Westminster turns its attention to the election campaigns.
The government's flagship smoking ban, plans for an independent football regulator, and the troubled Renter's Reform Bill have all been canned. https://www.itv.com/news/2024-05-23/which-new-laws-could-be-scrapped-because-of-the-election

Kellogg's recalls chocolate cornflakes over choking risk
Kellogg's is recalling boxes of its chocolate cornflakes following complaints of hard lumps in the cereal which could create a choking hazard.
The breakfast brand voluntarily asked consumers who had bought packs to dispose of them "as a precaution" after the issue was discovered.
Kellanova, the company which manufactures the cereal, said the hard lumps "do not break down when eaten with milk" and could also potentially damage teeth.
The Food Standards Agency said this, external made the product "unsafe to eat". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckvvn5xvdw1o

Pet owners told to buy medicine online to beat overpriced vets Competition body issues advice as it investigates escalating costs in £5bn market
Pet owners should buy medication online to avoid rip-off vet costs, the competition watchdog has said.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a review into the £5bn market amid concerns that private equity takeovers are driving up prices for pet owners.
About 60pc of vet practices now belong to large companies, up from 10pc a decade ago – almost 90pc of vets in the UK were independent in 2013. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/bills/pet-owners-told-buy-medicine-online-vet-prices/

Vet prescription fees could be capped by watchdog
A cap on vets' prescription fees is one of the measures being considered by the UK's competition body as it investigates the sector.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is forging ahead with a formal probe of the vets market amid concerns that pet owners are overpaying for treatments.
It said it had heard from thousands of people who were struggling to pay vet bills and did not always know the best treatment options for their pets.
The British Vet Association said regulation of the sector was "woefully out of date" as it welcomed the review. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx00dl5gwp8o
