The other 74% (Greeks stats) answered the 'phone and learnt the tax man was doing the rounds.

Briton arrested for setting fires

Police arrested a 57-year-old British man in Afidnes, north of Athens, Thursday on suspicion of arson after he allegedly started several fires in a wooded area.

According to authorities, the suspect admitted during questioning that he started the fires but claimed that he had been drunk at the time and was not aware of what he was doing.

He told the police that he is visiting Greece as a tourist. He is due to face a prosecutor on Friday.

Skoda drivers have last laugh as brand tops reliability survey

Korean firm Kia took the runner-up spot, while at the other end of the 26-strong manufacturer table, Chevrolet's cars were rated least reliable by their owners.

However, perhaps the biggest surprise was the number of prestige brands that performed poorly, with BMW, Jaguar and Audi all in the bottom five.

U.N. urges Greece to end 'total chaos' on islands where migrants land

The United Nations refugee agency called on Greece on Friday to take control of the "total chaos" on Mediterranean islands where thousands of migrants have landed.

European Union member states must also do more to share the burden of Greece, where 50,000 people arrived in July alone, said Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR director for Europe, after visiting the Greek islands of Lesbos, Kos and Chios.

"In terms of water, in terms of sanitation, in terms of food assistance, it's totally inadequate. On most of the islands, there is no reception capacity, people are not sleeping under any form of roof," he told a news briefing.

"So it's total chaos on the islands. After a couple of days they are transferred to Athens, there is nothing waiting for them in Athens."

Greek authorities must "lead and coordinate the response", said Cochetel, a 30-year veteran of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Greece says country cannot handle migrant inflows

Greece's infrastructure cannot handle the thousands of migrants landing on its shores from places like war-torn Syria and Afghanistan and needs European Union help, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Friday.

"Now is the time to see if the EU is the EU of solidarity or an EU that has everyone trying to protect their borders," he said after a meeting with ministers dealing with the influx.

European Union member states must also do more to share the burden of Greece, where 50,000 people arrived in July alone, said Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR director for Europe.

The UNHCR's European Director, Vincent Cochetel, said facilities for the refugees on the Greek islands were "totally inadequate", after a 750% increase in migrants arriving this year, compared with the same period last year.

He said 124,000 had arrived in Greece so far this year, including 50,000 in July alone.

Driver stopped with sheep in car tells police 'I was taking it to McDonald's'
A motorist in North Yorkshire who was travelling with a sheep in his boot tells police he was taking it out for a meal

The incident occurred in North Yorkshire when officers from the local roads policing group stopped the driver of a Peugeot 206 on suspicion of driving with two bald tyres.

But when they looked more closely at the vehicle they notice an unusual passenger in the hatchback boot of the car, a fully grown sheep.

When questioned why he was travelling with the animal in a family hatchback the motorist explained that he had taken it to a nearby McDonald’s restaurant for a meal.

“He told the officer, ‘some people take their dogs in their cars, I take my sheep’.

Diesel prices could fall to £1 a litre for the first time in six years, motoring groups have predicted after a price war broke out among supermarkets.

On average diesel now costs 114.62p a litre, according to the AA – a penny less than petrol after significant price cuts last month.

Fuel prices have now fallen by a quarter from their record high three years ago.

Privileges threatened, days may be numbered for Greece’s ‘everyman’ farmers
http://www.ekathimerini.com/200339/article/ekathimerini/community/privileges-threatened-days-may-be-numbered-for-greeces-everyman-farmers

Very interesting article on the huge financial support to Greek farmers (e.g. income tax reduced by 50% to mention only one) and the likely impact of its being withdrawn.

Also Kathimerini have made their English language pages extremely attractive and accessible with greatly expanded content much more like the Greek version.  It is now the go-to site for Greek news.
