Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece will fly to earthquake-stricken Cephalonia with the chief of National Defence General Staff, general Michail Kostarakos, who will coordinate the National Defence's activation of the Defkalion project on natural disasters.

The archbishop and the general will fly on a C-27J, which will be joined by a C-130 carrrying personnel, including three doctors, machinery (bulldozers) and equipment like tents and other basic needs to the island. A Chinook helicopter will also bring staff to the island while another will be placed on readiness.

In addition, the tank-landing craft Ikaria will bring bulldozers, a truck, a generator, and a light tower, a portable cooking unit and staff for it, and a water-tank truck, while another Chinook has been placed on readiness.

Haven't heard it's closed, munch. I'd think any rockfalls would be cleared p.d.q. as it's the main road of the island and pretty essential for services (inc. emergency services).

Another wobble:

A 5.7-Richter quake that shook Cephalonia on Monday, just over a week after a separate tremor of 5.8 Richter caused damage to buildings and roads on the Ionian island, has raised concerns among experts that the spike in activity could trigger a bigger event in the future.

“This is an area that has been of concern to us and will continue to concern us, because it’s not over yet,” the head of the Geodynamics Institute in Athens, Maria Sachpatzi, told Kathimerini on Monday.

“We can’t say with any certainty whether this process has started putting pressure on another, deeper point of the tectonic plate east of the island. But we are on high alert since two quakes have already occurred and it appears that the seismogenic zone is opening up,” said Sachpatzi. “The plate is breaking up at different points and we cannot exclude the possibility that another part of it may be activated.”

“This is a separate fault, a continuation of the northern Ionian fault,” said the Geodynamics Institute’s research director Thanasis Ganas. “It is the fourth fault to become active during this period.”

Hundreds of residents returned to sleeping in public squares and on two ferry boats used as temporary shelter since last week after tentatively going back to their homes once they were deemed safe over the weekend.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Monday called on the armed forces to provide support, equipment and supplies to the island to help the relief effort, while the Health Ministry also dispatched teams to provide assistance in the event of a third large quake.

Ministers and local authority representatives meeting on the quake-hit island of Cephalonia on Tuesday announced a series of measures to help residents whose homes were damaged by two strong earthquakes that came just over a week apart.

The measures include help with rent for tenants as well as access to low-interest credit for rebuilding and repairing damaged residences.

They were also briefed by two seismologists from the Geodynamic Institute, which on Monday said that it cannot overrule the possibility that the island may suffer another large quake in the future.

Chrysochoidis said that he will be meeting with Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras in the coming days to work out the details of how the cash-strapped state can provide assistance to Cephalonia's residents.

He added than an initial assessment of the damage found that some 600 buildings will have to be torn down, 1,100 need extensive repairs and 1,400 suffered minor damages.

The Ionian island of Cephalonia was on Monday night declared a natural disaster zone after it was hit by two large earthquakes on January 26 and on Monday measuring 5.8 and 5.7 on the Richter scale respectively, as well as by dozens of aftershocks in the 4-5 Richter range.

Crews from the Technical Chamber of Greece and the Ministry of Infrastructure were midway through assessing buildings on the island that suffered damage in the first quake - among them schools, hospitals and a nursing home - before Monday's tremor.

The general secretary of public works, Stratos Simopoulos told Kathimerini that by Sunday some 1,800 buildings had been inspected on the island and that 750 of them were deemed dangerous.

"We will now have to inspect every building all over again, even those given the green light," Simopoulos said.

Greek authorities set up tents Tuesday for those left homeless by a series of earthquakes on the western island of Kefalonia and were sending in dozens of prefabricated classrooms so children can go back to school safely.

Lines of tents filled a sports field near Lixouri, Kefalonia's second-largest town and the most severely hit area. The town's port was badly damaged and police were allowing only emergency vehicles along the road linking it to the rest of the island for fear of rock slides.

The government has said it is prepared to sent prefabricated containers to the Kefalonia, where hundreds of people have been left homeless following a week of earthquakes, but that the consequences of setting up temporary settlements on tourism will have to be addressed first.

We can put up with nature, but what about people?

The islanders could cope with nature’s adversities by putting to use their experience with earthquakes – which almost seems to be passing from one generation to the next – and, of course, with their good sense of humor – particularly the people of Lixouri, who are famous for poking fun at themselves.

The people of Cephalonia are still using their sense of humor – which also appears to be in their DNA – to joke about the state and to provide comfort to one another. Their main source of support after disaster struck was a wave of solidarity across the island which easily took precedence over a long tradition of local antagonisms (a nationwide trait in a country that is to a large extent still a collection of city-states).

So, the Cephalonians can put up with nature. It is humans they have a problem with. And here we are not just talking about those who will soon find opportunities to make money from the pain and suffering of their fellow humans, but also about the cynics out there who like to make a political issue of all the wounds caused by the quake only to then style themselves as the most suitable healers.

And then there are the seismologists. After keeping a relatively low profile in the early days after the first quake, when they reduced themselves to some critical innuendos, they are now upping the ante. They are thereby sowing fear. People listen to them with caution out of respect for their scientific credentials. But watching them attack each other, although they are not behind the closed doors of some academic conference, causes uncertainty and confusion.

As a result, people turn to the media – especially TV and radio. What they see is an ocean of scaremongering. Meanwhile, instead of being a fast source of information, the Internet is subjected to the abuse of anonymous users as a means of mass terror.

They have some nice oaths in Cephalonia, Some of the local curses, as we also know from poet and writer Nikos Kavadias, involve Gerasimos, the local patron saint. We should not provoke the Cephalonians too much, because it will not be long before the curses start flying in our direction.

Heard that there are hoaxes circulating, masked as official statements, claiming that Lixouri must be evacuated.

'Policemen' said to have ordered people out of homes in Cephalonia

An investigation has been launched into reports that a group of men posing as policemen ordered residents in the port town of Lixouri on the quake-hit island of Cephalonia to abandon their homes.

A prosecutor will be investigating the claims, which stirred panic among the residents of Lixouri.

Residents told authorities that groups of men dressed as police officers shouted that they had to evacuate their homes "as another earthquake is expected in 20 minutes."

A statement from the Greek Fire Service said that "in response to the unfounded rumors about an evacuation order being issued, we inform the public that the Civil Protection Authority has at no point issued such an announcement."

The Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), a branch of the Infrastructure Ministry, issued a separate statement urging residents of the Ionian island to remain calm.

"The aftermath of every strong earthquake always provides fertile ground for intense and baseless rumors regarding the development of the seismic phenomenon in the area that has been hit," the OASP said. "We stress that citizens need to remain calm... they should refrain from believing such rumors and, more importantly, from propagating them."

Blimey, hadn't thought about looters, Jean, but occaisionally things do 'disappear' in the night, even on Kef. *Perhaps* that's why extra police have been sent in - er, to minimise any looting, etc.

I'm far too polite, Tony!  :schtum:

Plus, of course, no-one's ever uttered any nasty oaths at me

Perhaps someone else can enlighten us? (though I'd think the above would apply to most GGi users!)

Think it's the usual stuff: Your mother is a really nice person, go have sex and travel, etc.
