Dozens Dead, Greeks Urged to Still Get Flu Shots

With the death toll hitting 91, Greeks are being urged to still get flu shots, more than five months after they were first advised with many not doing so.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention KEELPNO said it’s not too late to get vaccinated and that even though it is late in the season, infections were still on the rise.

In the week leading up to March 2, another 30 people were admitted to hospitals with serious symptoms of the infection as many Greeks don’t believe in getting shots to prevent illnesses.

Advised for over 65s in UK, I think.

Philippine police find 1,500 duct-taped turtles in luggage

Police in the Philippines have seized more than 1,500 live turtles found wrapped in duct tape at Manila airport.

The turtles, found in four unclaimed pieces of luggage, could have sold for more than 4.5 million pesos (£60,000; $86,631).

Police believe the bags were abandoned after the carrier found out about the harsh penalties for illegal wildlife trafficking.

Last week, 3,300 pig-nosed turtles were smuggled into Malaysia by boat - though this attempt was intercepted by Malaysia's maritime agency.

Endangered fruit bats ‘being driven to extinction’ in Mauritius after mass culls kill 50,000
'The fewer animals remain, the more vulnerable they will be to natural disasters, disease and habitat loss'

Scientists are suing the Mauritian government for “driving endangered fruit bats towards extinction”, after mass culls killed at least half their population.

More than 50,000 of the animals are thought to have been killed in three culls since 2015, in an attempt to protect fruit in orchards.

The bats – also known as flying foxes – are resorting to eating in orchards to survive because only 5 per cent of Mauritius’s native forests remain, animal experts warned.

Fruit bats are vital for biodiversity as they pollinate flowers and scatter seeds, enabling trees and plants to grow and spread, according to conservationists.

A former mayor of Elios-Pronnoi, Andreas Zapantis, is calling for the re-establishment of the municipality of Elios-Pronnoi, along with Sami, Paliiki/Lixouri rather than have the area included in the Argostoli municipality.

£1.6bn 'bribe' for poorer towns as May seeks Labour's backing for Brexit deal
Much of Stronger Towns Fund to be allocated to leave-voting towns in north of England and Midlands

Left-behind towns in England are to get a £1.6bn funding boost as part of a package of measures to win support for Theresa May’s Brexit deal among Labour MPs, who said the new cash would not buy their votes.

Labour MPs including Lisa Nandy and Gareth Snell who have signalled they might back May’s deal criticised the approach and said the cash would do little to tackle the effects of austerity.

The communities secretary, James Brokenshire, denied the money was a Brexit bribe and said it would be enough to have a “transformative” impact on areas that felt left behind.
