The EU’s Secret Plan for a Catastrophic Grexit
A new book, The Last Bluff, reports on official preparations for the disaster that almost was.

The top-secret plan had been filed away in 2012, the previous time Greece had teetered on the edge of default. It was code-named “Croatia’s Accession to the European Union” to disguise that it was a doomsday scenario for the country farther south. Any hint it even existed would have sent Greece deeper into crisis, spooked financial markets, and shaken confidence in the euro itself. Then in early June 2015 a fresh round of default negotiations seemed to be at an impasse. Not till negotiations ended on July 13, 2015, did the EU and Greece agree to a third bailout. In the meantime, the EU’s preparations for catastrophe continued, as detailed in this excerpt adapted from Viktoria Dendrinou and Eleni Varvitsioti’s book, The Last Bluff.

Wanted to Help Lure Wealthier Tourists to Greece

The Athens Riviera, just 20 minutes from the Acropolis and the Greek capital’s bustling city center, should have been a playground for the world’s wealthy. It’s not.

The 70-kilometer (44-mile) coastline, with its clear-blue waters, romantic sunsets and sweeping views of the Saronic Gulf, has only a handful of luxury hotels and even those have trouble finding the trained staff needed to cater to the whims of high-end visitors. Not surprisingly, tourists with deep pockets skirt the site, making it a missed opportunity for a country that draws as much as 20% of its gross domestic product from the hospitality industry.

Fascinating article about a book which it turns out is only available in Greek.  Unfortunately it does not explain how the authors came by a highly confidential EU document, but presumably the book does. Much of Veroufakis' arguments in Adults in the Room is similar but this gives a convincing picture of a likely disastrous outcome with the EU feeding up 20% of the Greek population.

Christiano Ronaldo On Holiday at Favorite Greek Resort

Ronaldo, 34, flew to Kalamata on a private jet and then onward to the resort aboard a helicopter. Local media say that there is a news blackout on the exact whereabouts of the football legend.

Most Greeks would like more gender equality in politics

The majority of Greeks (72 percent) believe that the shortage of women in the country’s political sphere is harmful to democracy, yet 89 percent of women have never considered running for office, a study by the Research Center for Gender Equality (KETHI), an independent body, has found.
