'Beautiful' wildcats could return to Devon after more than 100 years Wildcats could return to South West England for the first time in more than a century, thanks to a new study by the Devon Wildlife Trust.The European wildcat, known as the woodcat in England, was once found throughout the UK but was hunted to near-extinction by the 18th century.They can still be found in remote areas of Scotland, which has led them to be known as the 'Scottish wildcat', although a small population lived on Exmoor until the 1900s.Wildcats look like our domestic tabby cats, but can be up to 25% bigger and chunkier, with long legs. They are typically smaller than foxes and present no danger to people.
Beheaded pet cat found dumped on grave in CambridgeshireThe body of a family's pet cat has been found with her head missing, lying on a grave in a cemetery.A member of the public found the female ginger cat on a grave near March cemetery in Cambridgeshire on 6 January and took her to the vet for further examination, said the RSPCA.The vet believes the head was removed surgically and after death, rather than the cat having died from another cause and it being taken by a wild animal.The RSPCA is investigating.
Car cloning: innocent UK motorists get fines as scams accelerateOn Wednesday, Bouchaib Moussaid’s £8,000 Kia Sportage car was all set to be sold at auction by bailiffs. The care worker, who lives in St Albans in Hertfordshire, and his extended family have spent the last few weeks trying to stop the sale.Moussaid is one of a growing number of people who have had their car cloned.Unknown to him, someone had been using copies of his car’s registration plates and had driven in London’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) 12 times, resulting in him being sent a series of penalty fines.Despite Moussaid repeatedly telling Transport for London (TfL) that it was not him at the wheel, agents working for TfL seized his car in January.Late last year, the Guardian was contacted by another driver who had fallen victim to car cloning. The 88-year-old’s insurance doubled at renewal to £1,259 and she was told this was because her Ford Fiesta had been involved in an accident on the M25.Despite her pointing out that she had not driven on the M25 for more than a decade, and that she had been either at church or at home at the time of the accident – and the fact that she had reported that her car had been cloned to Hertfordshire police – her insurer, Zurich, refused to take the claim off her file. Paul Barker, the managing editor at the sales website Carwow, says the number of cloned cars on the UK’s roads is “unfortunately increasing”... the latest data from TfL shows that more than 12,762 Ulez charges were cancelled because of cars being cloned in 2022.Barker says if you find out your car has fallen victim to a cloning fraudster, it’s vital to act quickly and alert the authorities – ie the police – before further crimes are committed.

Inquest opens into Ipswich man's death in Corfu seaAn inquest has opened into the death of an 84-year-old man who died after getting into trouble while swimming in Corfu.Lewis Lay, who lived in Ipswich, died on September 11 last year while he was on holiday.During an opening at Suffolk Coroners Court on Friday, the court heard Mr Lay had been holidaying alone in Corfu and had travelled over to the Greek island as part of an organised tour group. It was heard that Mr Lay had got into trouble swimming in the sea, but this was unwitnessed.His body was found by visitors to a beach and staff from a nearby shop.
