Kef fire risk 08/06/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8855 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1039 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1293 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9059 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Greek pilot who killed British wife drops appeal over life sentence
Babis Anagnostopoulos received a 27-year sentence for smothering his wife in Athens

The Greek pilot who killed his British wife, Caroline Crouch, in a crime he tried to pin on ruthless foreign robbers, has unexpectedly announced he will drop an appeal to overturn his life sentence.

Anagnostopoulos, who claimed he killed his 19-year-old wife in the heat of the moment, had long argued his 27-year sentence should be reduced on account of mitigating circumstances.

Wednesday’s decision not only means he will have to serve his prison term to length – a sentence augmented by the 11.5 years he also received for choking his wife’s puppy and perverting the course of justice – but quashes any prospect of parole. By the time the 35-year-old is released from Greece’s high-security Malandrinos jail he will be in his late 50s.

Reacting to the news, the Briton’s distraught father, David, admitted he had been “astounded” by the decision but told the Guardian he was also “reluctant to take the announcement at face value”.

Boris and Carrie Johnson ‘hosted friend at Chequers during Covid restrictions’
Exclusive: friend ‘helped the couple plan their wedding’ in May 2021 when restrictions on indoor gatherings in place

Boris and Carrie Johnson hosted a close friend, who helped plan their wedding, overnight at Chequers when a number of Covid restrictions were in place, the Guardian has been told.

Dixie Maloney, a corporate events organiser, stayed at the former prime minister’s grace-and-favour country mansion on 7 May 2021 when indoor gatherings between different households were banned except when “reasonably necessary” for reasons such as work or childcare.

She is understood to have been informally helping to plan the couples’ festival-style wedding, which took place in the Downing Street garden three weeks later.

Johnson’s spokesperson said the stay was “entirely lawful” and sources close to him said Maloney was allowed to be there for childcare reasons at a time when Carrie was pregnant.

Google fixes new Chrome zero-day flaw with exploit in the wild

Google has released a security update for Chrome web browser to address the third zero-day vulnerability that hackers exploited this year.

Zero-day vulnerabilities are often exploited by sophisticated state-sponsored threat actors, aiming primarily at high-profile figures within government, media, or other vital organizations. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that all Chrome users install the available security update as soon as possible.

Google says the update will roll out in the coming days/weeks, so it is a gradual distribution that won't reach everyone simultaneously.

To start the Chrome update procedure manually to the latest version that addresses the actively exploited security issue, head to the Chrome settings menu (upper right corner) and select Help → About Google Chrome.

Relaunching the application is required to complete the update.

Available security updates are also automatically installed the next time the browser starts without user intervention, so check the "About" page to ensure you're running the latest version.

The new stable channel release addressing the flaw that has an exploit in the wild is version 114.0.5735.110 for Windows and 114.0.5735.106 for Mac and Linux.

Thug who left Nottinghamshire man with half a skull after one punch set to be released from prison

A thug who punched a man in an unprovoked attack, leaving him with a brain injury so bad he had to have half his skull removed, is set to be released from prison after serving less than a fifth of his sentence.

Braden Stromberg, 27, was walking through Bolsover in Derbyshire with his then-girlfriend, when Kyle Stevenson attacked him and knocked him to the ground by punching him once.

Doctors say Strombery, from Clipstone near Mansfield, was lucky to survive the attack in May 2022.

Stevenson admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to one year and ten and a half months in prison, in February 2023.

Now, having served four months behind bars - he's expected to walk free this week.

Braden was in a coma for 15 days following the attack and had such severe swelling in his brain, doctors had to remove half his skull.

He has to wear a helmet as his head is so vulnerable that a single knock could be fatal.

He's now awaiting further surgery to insert a titanium plate to reconstruct his skull.

Almost a tragedy earlier this morning when a small private helicopter from Zakynthos Aeroclub similar to the one above crash landed in a field near Koriana, Livathos. Pilot and passenger, said to be Greek males in their sixties, only slightly injured.

Traditional Greek offal dish, Kokoretsi, took 1st place on the list of the best-rated offal dishes in the world

Kokoretsi is a traditional Greek dish consisting of lamb or goat offal that is chopped into tiny pieces and seasoned with lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper. The offal is then skewered, covered with caul fat to keep the pieces in place, and cooked over charcoal.

Tiny Greek island threatened by fish farm set to dominate 25 per cent of its land and sea

Greek islanders are rallying against an industrial fish farm that would dominate a quarter of their land and coastline.

The island of Poros, just an hour’s ferry ride from Athens, is popular with eco-tourists who come to explore its pine forests and pristine coastline.

Eighty per cent of the island’s 3,000 residents rely on tourism - either directly or indirectly - for their income.

If approved, the fish farm would expand the island’s fish production by more than eight times, inundating its delicate underwater ecosystems with waste food and faeces.

As well as deterring visitors, this could impact the island’s wild fish, endangered European monk seals and Posidonia (seagrass) meadows.

The multimillion-euro plan seeks to expand the size of the island’s four existing fish farms by 28 times.

Kataifi pie is far more forgiving to make than that comforting Greek favourite spanakopita – but no less delicious

Better known as a sweet similar to baklava, seems kataifi is the type of 'angel hair' pastry used.
