Greek pilot who killed British wife drops appeal over life sentenceBabis Anagnostopoulos received a 27-year sentence for smothering his wife in AthensThe Greek pilot who killed his British wife, Caroline Crouch, in a crime he tried to pin on ruthless foreign robbers, has unexpectedly announced he will drop an appeal to overturn his life sentence.Anagnostopoulos, who claimed he killed his 19-year-old wife in the heat of the moment, had long argued his 27-year sentence should be reduced on account of mitigating circumstances.Wednesday’s decision not only means he will have to serve his prison term to length – a sentence augmented by the 11.5 years he also received for choking his wife’s puppy and perverting the course of justice – but quashes any prospect of parole. By the time the 35-year-old is released from Greece’s high-security Malandrinos jail he will be in his late 50s.Reacting to the news, the Briton’s distraught father, David, admitted he had been “astounded” by the decision but told the Guardian he was also “reluctant to take the announcement at face value”.

Google fixes new Chrome zero-day flaw with exploit in the wildGoogle has released a security update for Chrome web browser to address the third zero-day vulnerability that hackers exploited this year.Zero-day vulnerabilities are often exploited by sophisticated state-sponsored threat actors, aiming primarily at high-profile figures within government, media, or other vital organizations. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that all Chrome users install the available security update as soon as possible.Google says the update will roll out in the coming days/weeks, so it is a gradual distribution that won't reach everyone simultaneously. To start the Chrome update procedure manually to the latest version that addresses the actively exploited security issue, head to the Chrome settings menu (upper right corner) and select Help → About Google Chrome.Relaunching the application is required to complete the update.Available security updates are also automatically installed the next time the browser starts without user intervention, so check the "About" page to ensure you're running the latest version. The new stable channel release addressing the flaw that has an exploit in the wild is version 114.0.5735.110 for Windows and 114.0.5735.106 for Mac and Linux.

Tiny Greek island threatened by fish farm set to dominate 25 per cent of its land and sea Greek islanders are rallying against an industrial fish farm that would dominate a quarter of their land and coastline. The island of Poros, just an hour’s ferry ride from Athens, is popular with eco-tourists who come to explore its pine forests and pristine coastline.Eighty per cent of the island’s 3,000 residents rely on tourism - either directly or indirectly - for their income. If approved, the fish farm would expand the island’s fish production by more than eight times, inundating its delicate underwater ecosystems with waste food and faeces. As well as deterring visitors, this could impact the island’s wild fish, endangered European monk seals and Posidonia (seagrass) meadows. The multimillion-euro plan seeks to expand the size of the island’s four existing fish farms by 28 times.
