Dominic Cummings was "Mr. Brexit" the tough, even aggressive leader of the Vote Leave campaign, controversial to the extent that a group of traditional pro-Brexit Tory MPs, Bill Cash, Peter Bone etc and others tried unsuccessfully to get rid of him in January 2016. Along with Daniel Hannan he was the main brains behind Brexit and was said to have planned out the campaign two years in advance in an article in the Times, coining the slogan "Take back control". He totally opposed using Farage in the campaign as he considered him a vote loser, leading to some bitter disputes across the pro-Brexit campaign as a whole.
All told (plus much more, including the the failures of the Remain side) in extraordinary detail and frankness in Tim Shipman's
All Out War: The Full Story of How Brexit Sank Britain’s Political Class, a remarkably even-handed book, welcomed by all sides.
This partial climb-down from Cummings is more striking.
