North Macedonia’s new president reignites a spat with Greece at her inauguration ceremony

Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova was sworn as the first female president of North Macedonia on Sunday and immediately reignited a diplomatic spat with neighboring Greece.

At the ceremony in the country’s parliament, Siljanovska-Davkova referred to her country as “Macedonia,” rather than the constitutional name “North Macedonia.”

This prompted Greek Ambassador Sophia Philippidou to leave the inauguration ceremony. The Greek Foreign Ministry later issued a statement, saying that the new president’s actions violated an agreement between the two nations and put in danger both bilateral relations and North Macedonia’s prospects of joining the European Union.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen implicitly rebuked Siljanovska-Davkova’s choice of words.

Glimmer of hope for mountain chicken frog which was once a national dish

A frog that has been cooked and eaten for decades on the Caribbean island of Dominica is on the verge of becoming extinct, but there is now a frantic push to try to save it.

The mountain chicken frog (Leptodactylus fallax) was once considered Dominica's unofficial national dish, according to locals.

"When I used to cook it, I would just cut it and put it into a broth," says Alain Mellow as he sits selling fruit and vegetables in Roseau, the bustling capital city of Dominica.

It tasted "just like chicken", according to Mr Mellow, who is now in his 70s.

“Bionic eye” discovers Plato’s final resting place
The burial spot was found in one of the Herculaneum scrolls charred by Mt. Vesuvius.

Greek philosopher Plato played a huge role in shaping Western thought, particularly around politics, and even though he died more than 2,300 years ago, his “Republic” is still one of the most studied books at top US colleges.

Despite Plato’s wide and lasting influence, though, there’s still a lot we don’t know about him, including his final resting place. Historians had been able to narrow it down to the garden of the school he founded in Athens, but where exactly in the expansive gardens was a mystery — until now.
