Kef fire risk 18/10/22: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8884 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0031 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1256 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9969 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Global investors see Britain as the new Greece, says Bank deputy

Political and economic instability has prompted lenders to regard the British economy as similar to Italy and Greece, a former deputy governor of the Bank of England has said.

Sir Charlie Bean, who was deputy governor for monetary policy from 2008 to 2014, said it was “disingenuous” of the government to say the market turmoil is “all a global phenomenon”.

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 lost communications with Air Traffic Control (ATC) while over the Balkan States on October 15th. The cargo freighter departed Liege Airport in Belgium and the pilots were in contact with ATC while in Croatian airspace but then stopped responding.

The plane overflew Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania before entering Greek airspace. Once over Greece, Athens Center attempted to contact the flight crew and announced that fighter jets would be scrambled to intercept the freighter. No response was heard from the pilots.

When the plane had overflown Greece and was over the Med it was intercepted by Greek fighter jets. Communications recommenced. The flight landed safely in Ethiopia.

Liz Truss’s popularity among voters dives to new low as she seeks to pacify restless Tories

As Liz Truss fights for her political life, her popularity with the British public has plummeted to a new low, a poll has showed.

Her reversal of her flagship economic policy and an appointment of a new chancellor has done little to lift the public mood, with just 10% of Britons having a favourable opinion of the prime minister, with 80% viewing her unfavourably, the YouGov survey showed.

Among Tory voters her support also continues to plummet: 20% had a favourable view of their party’s leader, with 71% having an unfavourable view.

Abandoning state pension triple lock would cost retirees £22,000

BT’s pension fund ‘fell by £11bn’ after mini-budget
Report from one of the UK’s largest schemes is an early indicator of scale of the financial impact on retirement funds

BT’s pension scheme has revealed the value of its assets plummeted by an estimated £11bn in recent weeks, after the meltdown in UK government bond markets following Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget.

The disclosure in the annual report published by BT Pension Scheme (BTPS), one of the UK’s largest company retirement plans with almost 270,000 members, provides one of the first insights into the scale of the financial impact on funds.

Pension schemes with more than £1tn invested in them came under severe strain following a dramatic rise in interest rates on long-dated UK government bonds in the days after the disastrous mini-budget on 23 September.

The Bank of England, which was forced to intervene five days later with a promise to buy up to £65bn of government debt in a bid to steady the situation, said had it not intervened then money managed on behalf of pensioners across the country “would have been left with negative net asset value” and cash demands they could not have met.

Woman, 23, claims world record for Land’s End to John O’Groats swim
Jasmine Harrison already holds another world record for being the youngest woman to solo row across the Atlantic last year.

23-year-old has become the first woman in the world to swim from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Jasmine Harrison, from Thirsk in North Yorkshire, completed the gruelling 900-mile swim on Tuesday after about three-and-a-half months of swimming.

The distance is the equivalent of swimming about 58,000 lengths of a 25m pool.

The swimming teacher and motivational speaker already holds a world record for being the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic in February last year.

Battling thousands of jellyfish, being followed by a shark and swimming into a live military exercise, Ms Harrison swam between four and 12 hours a day after first entering the water at Land’s End in western Cornwall on July 1.
