Arsenal 1 Chelsea 1 (Arsenal 4-1 on pens): Gunners win 2017 Community Shield in first ABBA penalty shootout
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/08/06/arsenal-vs-chelsea-community-shield-2017-live-score-updates/

ABBA... something you might be hearing about, it's the way penalties will be taken in football matches. Up to now the system has been 'ABAB':

  1st penalty – Team A
 2nd penalty – Team B
 3rd penalty – Team A
 4th penalty – Team B

and so on...

Quote
“The stats at the moment say that 60 per cent of penalty shootouts are won by the team that takes the first penalty."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/03/03/penalty-shoot-outs-could-soon-resemble-tennis-tie-breaks/

The new 'ABBA' system aims to level the playing field. Here's how it works:

  1st penalty – Team A
 2nd penalty – Team B
 3rd penalty – Team B
 4th penalty – Team A
 5th penalty – Team A
 6th penalty – Team B
 7th penalty – Team B
 8th penalty – Team A
 9th penalty – Team A
10th penalty – Team B

Both teams will take five penalties, sudden death if that results in a draw. A little more on efl.com

Thousands of houses for sale to cover debts

More than 20,000 houses have been put up for sale in Greece over the last 12 months because their owners are unable to meet their obligations, particularly regarding mortgage payments.

Fearing that their bank accounts will be frozen or their properties confiscated, owners are being forced to put their homes on the market at prices low enough to attract buyers and to pay their way out of financial troubles.

UK data protection laws to be overhauled

Proposals included in the bill will:

*    make it simpler for people to withdraw consent for their personal data to be used
*    let people ask for data to be deleted
*    require firms to obtain "explicit" consent when they process sensitive personal data
*    expand personal data to include IP addresses, DNA and small text files known as cookies
*    let people get hold of the information organisations hold on them much more freely

The bill is also intended to transfer the European Union's current General Data Protection Regulation into UK law.

This places a strong burden on firms to protect data and allows for significant fines if they fail to protect information or suffer a breach.

In the UK firms that suffer a serious data breach could be fined up to £17m or 4% of global turnover.

The current maximum fine firms can suffer for breaking data protection laws is £500,000.

Police at Kef airport yesterday arrested... a Turkish couple with two kids, all trying to use forged documents to board a flight to Italy.

Police at Kef airport yesterday arrested a Turkish couple with two kids for trying to use forged documents to board a flight to Italy.

Presumably a different couple and different kids?

Ithaka Coast Guard in Vathy have impounded a high-speed 'dinghy' after an inspection revealed it had been illegally charted for eight days at a cost of 1,350€.

What I hear, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Land Policy is clamping down on illegal charters with fines having to be paid on the spot or doubling if not.

New grass snake discovered in the UK

A new type of snake has been discovered in the UK, bringing the total number of species to four.

Scientists say the barred grass snake, Natrix helvetica, is actually a different species to the common or eastern grass snake, Natrix natrix.

Before, it was thought the grass snake was one species with several subspecies that looked slightly different.

The others native to the UK are the smooth snake and the adder, which is venomous.

Grass snakes are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act so it is a criminal offence to injure or kill them.
