The coast guard in Greece, in cooperation with the newly established independent authority for public revenues, has reportedly stepped up checks of yachts and tourist vessels this summer in an attempt to net undeclared charter revenues and foreign-registered vessels that illegally carry out excursions exclusively in Greek waters.

Animal abusers 'get away with it' and avoid jail, finds report

Those who commit cruelty against animals "are getting away with it" due to the "leniency" of UK courts, according to a report.

Of 13,862 people found guilty of animal cruelty in England and Wales from 2005 to 2015, more than 92% avoided prison, the Centre for Crime Prevention says.

It has called for the maximum sentence for offenders to be increased from six months to five years.

The government says it is reviewing the matter.

Autopsies solve strange case of French friends who died over dinner
Speculation about what caused two men to die suddenly in Authon-du-Perche had gripped France

When two men enjoying a summer dinner of roasted beef and canned beans dropped dead in Authon-du-Perche, the French village found itself at the centre of what seemed to be a sinister mystery that gripped the country.

Neither the body of Olivier Boudin, 38, found lying on his back on the ground, or that of Lucien Perot, 69, sat at the terrace table before a half-finished plate, some camembert, a partly eaten baguette and a glass of wine, showed signs of an attack or a fight and there was no indication of a break-in or robbery.

A neighbour who spotted them at 6am last Thursday at Perot’s home assumed they were sleeping off the effects of the boozy evening before and left them be.
