From Versailles to the euro

This month marks the centenary of the Treaty of Versailles, one of the agreements that brought World War I to a close. In a sense, the tables have turned. Whereas the treaty imposed huge reparations on Germany, today’s Germany has taken the lead in imposing a large debt obligation on its fellow eurozone member Greece.

Inside Cristiano Ronaldo's €8,000-per-night holiday villa in Greece

Earlier this week, Cristiano Ronaldo was seen enjoying a well-deserved holiday.

Having stayed there for seven nights, Ronaldo and his girlfriend - along with Cristiano Jr. - spent €56,000 in accommodation alone.

But Villa Methoni Royal looks to be worth every penny - if you have that sort of money.

The villa stands at 630 square metres and is just a few steps away from the golden sands of the private Dunes Beach.

The three-bedroom resort "offers guests excellent comforts and total privacy”.

The place also offers a 24-hour butler service, shuttle service to the airport, use of helipad pick-up and, if required, an experienced chef who prepares breakfast, lunch, dinner and BBQs.

KNIFEPOINT ORDEAL Teen raped at knifepoint by Scots tourist in Zante feared he would ‘choke her to death’

A TEEN raped at knifepoint by a Scots tourist has spoken out about her "life or death" ordeal in her Zante apartment.

The terrified bar worker, then 18, was subjected to a two-hour attack at the hands of evil Thomas McLean on the Greek holiday island in June 2014.

Thomas McLean, 62, was sentenced to ten years behind bars for the violent sex attack two years ago.

Prosecutors told a court he claimed she agreed to sex then suddenly attacked him.

He was found guilty in his absence after a judge heard injuries on the victim were inconsistent with his account.

But he is still walking free in Whitburn, West Lothian, after fighting extradition to serve time in a Greek prison.

McLean's extradition case in Edinburgh has suffered a series of delays.

The whinging rapist has claimed the conditions in Greek prisons may not be good enough for him, as his lawyer fights for an independent report.

Greek Royal House denies reports King Constantine of Greece has been rushed to hospital

The Greek Royal House has issued a statement denying that the country’s former King, Constantine II, has been admitted to hospital following a deterioration in his health.

A spokesperson said: “His Majesty King Constantine is in good health and is not in the hospital as the tabloids have published, if so, he would have made an official statement from his office.”

Greek media incorrectly reported that the former monarch suffered a heart attack, however, this proves to be false.

One in three at risk of poverty in Greece

About one in every three Greeks runs the risk of poverty or social exclusion, a rate that keeps Greece on a par with Bulgaria and Romania and far below countries such as Finland and the Czech Republic in the European Union.
