Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

New legislation seeks to safeguard Greek songs

More than 150 Greek composers, lyricists, singers and musicians signed an open letter on Wednesday expressing support for a Culture Ministry bill for the protection and promotion of Greek-language songs and music.

The initiative by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, which stipulates a 45% quota for Greek songs played in public spaces, such as hotels, for example, is described in the letter as a “ray of light.”

“Greek songs, its creators and contributors have a long, wonderful journey that makes Greece proud. Greek poetry set to music is over 2,000 years old. It is not certain, however, that it can survive another day if drastic, coordinated action is not taken now for their protection,” the letter said.

POS everywhere from April 1

All professionals belonging to the 35 branches of the Greek economy in which card terminals (POS) were not mandatory until now, have a deadline of 24 days to activate them.

These are the last sectors remaining that do not have terminals to take card payments, but that is changing from April 1. These include open-air markets and outdoor traders, kiosks, convenience stores and mini-markets, taxis, brokers, advertising agencies and public relations agencies, as well as theaters and cinemas.

Greece’s Recovery Lures Back 342,000 Who Left During Economic Crisis

Despite low wages, soaring rents and high food prices, Greeks who left the country during a 2010-18 economic and austerity crisis are returning in droves, some 342,000 of the 592,000 during an exodus to other countries.

Most Greeks Believe Government Cover-up of Deadly Train Accident

While holding leads as high as 20 percent in surveys, most Greeks believe the ruling New Democracy government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is trying to hide the reasons behind a February, 2023 head-on train crash that killed 57.

An Alco poll conducted on behalf of private broadcaster Alpha showed that 77 percent of respondents also don’t believe government assertions the railways have been made safer, with indications that promised measures haven’t been implemented.

The government is keeping an investigation secret, with no reports of progress more than a year later, and a parliamentary committee controlled by New Democracy lawmakers also won’t let the public know of its discussions, leading some rival parties to walk out.

Only the stationmaster on duty, with little training and on the job only a few days, has been charged, along with a handful of railway executives, not including any from the Italian company which runs the railways, long having a dubious reputation.

The Greek General Secretariat for Shipping and Ports seems to have realised the significance of traditional boat building and is establishing a register of manufacturers, maintainers and repairers of wooden traditional vessels.

Almost 5 000 false identity documents seized in Greece

The Aliens Division of Attica within the Hellenic Police (Ellinikí Astynomía), supported by Europol, targeted a criminal network involved in document fraud and migrant smuggling activities. The criminal network, based in Athens, produced high-quality falsified travel and identification documents, which were used to enable irregular migrants to travel illegally across the EU and legalise their stay in their final destination country. The investigation led to four action days between September 2023 and February 2024. More than 50 connected cases of smuggling by air have been investigated.

Overall results of the four action days:

    11 arrests (3 Palestinians, 3 Latvians, 2 Iranians, 2 Syrians, 1 Lebanese),
    4 print shops dismantled,
    Seizures including:
        4 650 illegal documents,
        electronic equipment,
10 high-end laser printers and other equipment/material for the production of false documents,
over EUR 20 000 in cash.

The costs of false documents ranged from EUR 400 to EUR 1 200, depending on its type and country of origin.

Currys completes sale of its Greek business Kotsovolos following approval

Currys has completed the sale of its Greek business Kotsovolos after first entering a deal with Greek electricity supplier Public Power Corporation (PPC) in November last year.

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, Currys said PPC has received “unconditional approval” from the Hellenic Competition Commission for the purchase of Dixons South East Europe, the holding company of Kotsovolos.
