Some lost rail routes may be 'restored'

Railway lines closed in the 1960s could be reopened if they boost the economy, the government has said.

The plan forms part of a wider rail strategy under which the government will consider splitting up two of the biggest train operators.

Some 4,000 miles of rail routes were closed in the 1960s, mainly in rural areas, known as the Beeching cuts.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said the new rail lines could unlock jobs, encourage house building and ease overcrowding.

"The system is creaking - it's bursting at the seams," he said.

Mr Grayling said the new routes would "provide better services for commuters but also unlock housing potential".

Work on the Oxford to Cambridge route starts next summer, and plans to re-open routes around Bristol, Birmingham, Exeter and the North East are being considered.

Smuggler's car overloaded with migrants careers off cliff in Greece

Four people have died after a smuggler's car carrying eight migrants drove off a 90-foot cliff during a police chase in northern Greece.

Hospital officials say the other four migrants and the Pakistani driver of the overloaded vehicle were injured, one seriously, in the accident late on Tuesday.

Some of the migrants had been stuffed into the car's boot.

Russian man dies after posing for photo with hand grenade

A Russian man has died after he pulled the pin out of a hand grenade and posted photographs of himself holding it.

Not clear from that sentence whether he was holding the hand grenade or the pin, the photo clears that up.

Mykonos Restaurant Owner Arrested over Aegean Speedboat Drug Ring

A Mykonos restaurant owner; who also manages a shipping company in Athens, is the owner of six speedboats that were used to transport tons of hashish from the coast of Albania to Turkey via Samothrace, Greek police say.
