1 €UR = $ 1.7024 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5874 €UR

Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Online fraud takes on ominous proportions

Online fraud is becoming a veritable scourge with more than 3,000 cases recorded in 2023 alone, according to cybercrime authorities.

More specifically, 3,656 cases and 273 attempts were recorded, with only 627 solved so far, while the victims of fraud amounted to 3,733.

These scams include attempts to capture personal passwords through misleading messages, including the old trick of sending prospective victims emails or text messages about supposedly “forgotten” parcels at the post office. In recent days, misleading calls to mobile phones have also been recorded with greater frequency, with the most widespread method involving a recorded message in English purporting to inform citizens of “interception of their identity details.”

State will fight illegalities on the beaches

Checks on beaches are beginning by mixed squads, which are called to establish if there are any illegalities by businesses and hotel units.

Already, by a decision of Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis, fines have been activated, which, apart from the removal of arbitrary constructions and exclusion from tenders and concessions, can reach 60,000 euros each.

The state’s land services are now responsible for the control of the coast and beaches; however, the local municipalities also have monitoring and ascertainment competences, but have to refer the cases they identify to the land authorities.

Pompeii: Breathtaking new paintings found at ancient city

Stunning artworks have been uncovered in a new excavation at Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried in an eruption from Mount Vesuvius in AD79.

Archaeologists say the frescos are among the finest to be found in the ruins of the ancient site.

Mythical Greek figures such as Helen of Troy are depicted on the high black walls of a large banqueting hall.
