Καλό μήνα

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8999 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1112 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.0938 USD   $1 USD = 0.9142 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7241 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5800 €UR
1 €UR = R20.9482 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0477 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Greece to Pay Citizens €3,000 for Reporting Tax Evasion

Greece’s Ministry of Finance has announced an initiative to offer citizens a bonus of up to 3,000 euros for reporting instances of tax evasion. The incentive is part of a broader movement in strengthening tax compliance and transparency in the country’s financial system.

To ease the reporting process, the Independent Directorate of Revenue (AADE) previously introduced a mobile app called “appodixi” that allows users to scan QR codes on receipts to identify potential cases of tax evasion.

Since its release, the application has seen over 235,000 downloads, with users filing a total of 135,000 complaints, according to AADE.

In addition to the appodixi app, the Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance, together with AADE, launched a citizen complaints platform accessible through the myAADE digital portal. This platform allows users to submit complaints and information related to corruption, tax, and customs violations.

Car rentals heading for an all-time high

Short- and long-term car rentals are projected to record their best ever performance in Greece this year.

The industry could only benefit from the significant increase in tourism arrivals, the rise in car registrations and the continued demand also from individuals for long-term rental services (leasing).

As a result, the car rental market has grown not only compared to 2022, but also compared to 2019, a record year.

According to expert estimates, this year around 30,000-35,000 new vehicles were added to the ‘rent-a-car’ market, compressing rental rates, which, however, remain at higher levels compared to the period before the pandemic.

Starbucks windows smashed and third McDonald’s infested with mice by protesters

The windows of a Starbucks have been smashed and a third McDonald’s has been flooded with mice after pro-Palestine activists attack chains over their alleged support for Israel.

Footage shows a group of hooded men striking the glass windows of the café in Keighly, Yorkshire, with hammers.

A McDonald’s chain in Yorkshire was also flooded with stick insects by activists draped in the Palestinian flag.

It comes after a third McDonald’s in Birmingham was infected with mice after they were deliberately released by protestors.

Footage shows a group of men storming inside the building in Small Heath, chanting ‘free Palestine’ and waving the country’s flag.

One of the protestors steps forwards and throws a large box containing white mice at staff.

The group repeatedly shout ‘f*** Israel’ before fleeing.

'I own the UK's biggest dog - he eats whole chickens every day and it costs me £4k a year'

Owner Dylan Shaw believes his canine, two-year-old Abu, a Turkish Malakli, is the UK's biggest dog, as the huge hound "dwarfs Great Danes".

Standing at a huge 7ft 2in when on his hind legs and weighing just over 18 stone, the humongous pooch takes a whole lot of feeding.

Heard there's a fire near Marietta hotel in Skala, unclear if it's a building or bush fire. PZLs left the island today but it would be too dark for them to fly now.

Johnson asked scientists about ‘special hairdryer to kill Covid’, says Cummings

Boris Johnson asked the top scientists Sir Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance if Covid could be destroyed by blowing a “special hairdryer” up the nose, according to Dominic Cummings.

Johnson’s former senior political adviser described this moment as a “low point”, with the ex-prime minister circulating a YouTube video of a man using a device for this purpose.

Aye, just fill the "special hairdryer" with a certain white powder.
