The boisterous Portokalos family is coming back to the big screen.

Universal Pictures has acquired the domestic distribution rights to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2," a sequel to the beloved independent hit, with writer and star Nia Vardalos set to return.

'Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' is a big fat letdown

It's only when those credits roll that you'll likely find yourself thinking: 14 years, for this?

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 review – more stereotypes and baklava, anyone?
Big Greek family stalks a browbeaten daughter in this shouty, ramshackle rom-com sequel

Nia Vardalos delves into her seemingly endless supply of big crude Greek stereotypes for a sequel to one of the most cancerously patronising romantic comedies of all time.

Beware the Greeks who come bearing sequels: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is almost unwatchably feeble

As in the first film, the driving gag is the loving volatility of an extended Greek family that sees ‘no difference between hugging and suffocation’.

But this time there’s some secondary nonsense involving Toula’s parents (Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan) and whether or not they’re actually married in the eyes of the Greek Orthodox Church.

The old man’s conviction that he is descended directly from Alexander the Great is similarly laboured and unfunny.

But if the plot is lame, and the jokes even lamer, still less forgivable is the acting, some of which is at least wooden as the Trojan Horse.

I make no apology for the analogy, either, since every Hellenic cliche imaginable is dusted down and dragged out, most of them with the Zorba music jingling in the background.

So here’s another little customised one of my own: beware of Greeks making sequels.

Box Office: 'Batman V Superman' Can't Stop 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' From Snagging $7M Friday

The movie will play just fine for fans of the original... and between you and me it’s actually a superior picture to the first one.
