Reality Check: Do footballers get paid for internationals?

French striker Mbappe has caused a stir by revealing he is giving his £17,000-per-match World Cup appearance fees to a charity providing sporting activities for disabled children.

In this, he is following the example set by England's players since 2007. In that time, all the appearance fee money they would have received has instead gone to the England Footballers Foundation, which has distributed more than £5m to charities.

The FA does not reveal the size of England men's appearance fees and a spokesman told Reality Check: "We won't be releasing any information regarding player payments."

England football supporters likely to be keeping Kef bar owners happy for a little longer as the national team actually played some good football to beat Sweden 2-0. Bars likely to be busy this Tuesday, 10/07 at 21:00 (19:00 UK) as the match between Belgium and France decides who else is in the final. Bars likely to be even busier on Wednesday, 11/07 at 21:00 (19:00 UK) when England take on either Russia or Croatia.

Family doctor scheme far from off the ground

A “family doctor” scheme that the EOPYY national healthcare fund has been trying to set up is far from getting off the ground, Kathimerini understands.

Since mid-June, all prescriptions for medicine or health tests have been accompanied by a Health Ministry note asking citizens to register with their local “family doctor.”

However, people are often unable to find a doctor.

Greece’s population shrinking due to crisis

Greece’s population has decreased by around 355,000 people since the financial crisis started hitting hard in 2011, and if nothing is done to offset this downward trend, by 2050 Greek citizens will at most number 10 million, according to the country’s statistics agency (ELSTAT).
