HMRC cracks down on British expats as tax haul trebles: are you at risk?

British expats have been urged to ensure that their tax affairs are in order as HM Revenue & Customs escalates efforts to target those who live abroad.

The taxman has massively stepped up the use of EU laws designed to increase co‑operation between tax authorities. Experts say this is accelerating after the amount of tax HMRC collected from people living overseas trebled in just a year.

Uruguay: The Little South American Country with Many Philhellenes

One can say that Uruguay is a country of philhellenes, as out of the 3,500,000 million people living there, at least 6,000 people speak fluent Greek as if it is their mother tongue.

Ancient Greece features prominently in the South American country. Roads and squares have Greek names and statues of ancient philosophers decorate public buildings.

Uruguay is unlike most Latin countries, as there is little corruption and crime

Fray Bentos: a town in Uruguay – not just a meat pie
The sleepy town was once home to the food brand that began in 1863 and the industrial landscape is now a world heritage site

The Fray Bentos brand is best known for the manufacture and sale in the United Kingdom of a range of tinned meat pies such as steak and kidney and minced beef and onion. Since 2011, the brand in the UK has been owned by Baxters, who manufacture Fray Bentos products at their site at Fochabers in Scotland.

In 1865, Liebig's Extract of Meat Company was founded in Britain by German chemist Justus von Liebig. The company established a factory in Uruguay to manufacture a beef extract product that would later be sold under the name Oxo. In 1873, the factory began manufacturing tinned corned beef, which was sold in Britain under the name Fray Bentos, the town in Uruguay where the factory was located.

Fray Bentos's heyday was in World War II... As a result of the demand for Fray Bentos products at this time the Uruguayan currency became more valuable than the US dollar.

Baby powder and coffee to be banned from airline hand luggage

Airline passengers could face restrictions on carrying powder in hand luggage as part of a new security crackdown, The Times has learnt.

The government is considering imposing new rules on items such as baby powder, cosmetics, coffee, spices and protein mixes on all flights to and from the UK.

The move would bring Britain into line with the United States, Australia and New Zealand, which imposed restrictions on powder in hand luggage at the end of last month.
