Eurostat: Greece ranks third in number of radio stations in EUGreece has the third highest number of radio stations in the EU, after Spain and Italy, data from the EU’s statistical arm Eurostat has shown.According to the figures, released to mark World Radio Day, Spain, with 714 stations, Italy (679), Greece (599), France (343) and Portugal (299) held the top five spots in 2022 in terms of the number of radio stations.In terms of stations per million population, Slovenia recorded the highest ratio with 75 stations enterprises per million inhabitants, followed by Greece (57).
Holiday car hire prices plummet as vehicle shortages easeCar hire prices have fallen sharply in many popular holiday destinations this year as vehicle shortages ease, according to a new report.Average weekly prices for the Easter holiday period are lower compared with 12 months earlier in 11 out of 13 destinations analysed by consumer group Which?.The largest decrease was recorded in Funchal on Portugal’s Madeira islands... Other destinations where prices have fallen include the Greek island of Corfu...Average prices are also down in nine of the 13 locations analysed for the summer holiday period, led by Greece’s Rhodes (down £160, from £419 to £259).Car hire prices reached record levels last year after supply chain issues limited the production of new cars, making it harder for rental companies to replenish stocks to keep up with high demand for travel after the lifting of coronavirus restrictions.Which? said hire companies are also more likely to hold onto older stock for longer as “the brakes have been put on the used car market”, creating an “oversupply of vehicles” leading to cheaper prices for holidaymakers.The consumer group stated that this year’s drop in car hire prices is “positive” but noted they remain far higher than before the pandemic.Compared with 2019, Easter prices are 51% more expensive, while summer prices are 53% higher.Naomi Leach, deputy editor of magazine Which? Travel, said: "While it’s encouraging to see car rental prices finally starting to ease after the sky-high rates of the last few years, travellers should nonetheless be cautious if they’re quoted a rock-bottom price that sounds too good to be true."

Landmark court win for British woman who claimed she was raped by bartender in GreeceA British woman who claimed she was raped by a bartender while on holiday has won a complaint against the Greek authorities at the European Court of Human Rights.According to court documents, the woman, who is referred to as Ms X, was aged 18 at the time of the alleged incident in 2019.The bartender, who she met in the seaside town of Parga on the west coast of Greece, claimed the woman consented to having sex.Judges in Strasbourg highlighted “significant shortcomings” as they found Greek authorities breached articles 3 and 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights because there had not been an effective investigation into the allegations and the “criminal proceedings had fallen short of the required standards”.

Greek Prosecutor Wants Guilty Verdicts for Deadly 2018 Mati FireA prosecutor asked for guilty verdicts for 21 people, including four formerly high-ranking state officials charged over the July 23, 2018 wildfires that killed 104 people and devastated the seaside town of Mati.The prosecutor, Panagiotis Maniatis, said there were significant deficiencies in the firefighting response, including water-dropping aircraft in the disaster that occurred when the Radical Left SYRIZA was in power.The government at the time didn’t have a disaster response plan nor a system to alert people on their cell phones of the fire, for which then premier Alexis Tsipras took “political responsibility” but wasn’t charged.But other state officials were, including in the fire department and regional party authorities, the prosecutor saying failures to coordinate the response were criminal acts and omissions that built the death toll.
