Don't forget: most shops in Greece closed tomorrow (Independence Day). Weather's not looking too good for it.

Nothing specific but the PNO (nautical union) are muttering about industrial action over unpaid wages and lack of new collective agreements.

Soros says Greece is now ‘lose-lose game’ after being mishandled

The chances of Greece leaving the euro area are now 50-50 and the country could go “down the drain,” billionaire investor George Soros said.

“Greece is a long-festering problem that was mishandled from the beginning by all parties.”

Gold in faeces 'worth millions'

US researchers are investigating ways to extract the gold and precious metals from human faeces.

The group identified gold in waste from American sewage treatment plants at levels which if found in rock could be worth mining.

England's only wild beavers returned home
A family of beavers, the only such creatures in England, have been released back into their river home after being certified as healthy

DNA tests also confirmed they were Eurasian beavers, a species found in the UK before being hunted to extinction several hundred years ago, rather than North American beavers.

Why (and When) You Need to Replace Your Surge Protector

Surge protectors aren’t like diamonds. They have a definite lifespan. At some point, your surge protector will stop protecting your gear from power surges and become a dumb power strip.

It’s difficult to tell exactly when a surge protector loses those protective powers and just functions as a power strip. But, if you’re still using an old surge protector you purchased ten years ago, it’s probably long past time to replace it.

Not something I'd given any thought to but as we get a fair few spectacular lightning strikes out here I did a web search and found:

Quote
It is hard to determine the actual lifespan of a surge protector in months or years due to the unpredictability of electrical surges. The website Zero Surge suggests that most standard surge protectors should last around five years before needing to be replaced but a surge that damages the protector will instantly shorten the life.

Might be worth thinking about.

Secure you wireless router

There is no such thing as perfect security. Given enough knowledge, resources, and time any system can be compromised. The best you can do is to make it as difficult for an attacker as possible. That said there are steps you can take to harden your network against the vast majority of attacks.

The default configurations for what I call consumer-grade routers offer fairly basic security. To be honest, it doesn’t take much to compromise them.

Ordnance Survey releases mapping tool

A mapping tool that gives a detailed picture of local information in almost every corner of the UK is released by Ordnance Survey (OS).

The free data set brings together information about crime, business rates, property types, local transport and geographical information.

The OS is not creating a new Google Maps-style service of its own, but is rather providing its data for use by other third-party apps and online tools that can use it to enhance their products.

The data set could be used by people looking to start a cafe to find out if any rivals were located nearby, if business rates were high, how many people live near the site and to check local crime statistics and their influence on insurance.
