Καλό μήνα

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8908 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0687 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1226 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9357 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Forty-hour ambulance waits as NHS delays worsen

More than 10,000 ambulances a week are caught in queues of at least an hour outside accident-and-emergency units in England, a BBC News analysis shows.

The total - the highest since records began, in 2010 - means one in eight crews faced delays on this scale by mid-November.

Paramedics warned the problems were causing patients severe harm.

One family told BBC News an 85-year-old woman with a broken hip had waited 40 hours before a hospital admission.

She waited an "agonising" 14 hours for the ambulance to arrive and then 26 in the ambulance outside hospital.

Batteries linked to hundreds of waste fires

Batteries thrown in household rubbish bins cause about 700 fires every year in dustcarts and waste-processing centres, local authorities say.

Lithium-ion batteries can explode if damaged or crushed.

The Environmental Services Association says resulting fires cost fire services and waste operators some £158m a year.

Non-profit organisation Material Focus, which surveyed local authorities, runs an online search tool to help people find their nearest recycling point.

Cocaine Bear: True story of infamous bear who consumed duffel bag of cocaine and got Hollywood treatment
Animal overdosed after it ate 70 pounds of drugs thrown out of plane by infamous smuggler

When Georgia investigators stumbled across the infamous Cocaine Bear in 1985 its cause of death was unmistakable.

The 175-pound black bear was found next to a duffel bag that had once been filled with more than 70 pounds of cocaine before it was hurled from a drug smuggler’s plane.

Except now it was ripped open with 40 empty packets scattered near the overdosed animal’s carcass.

Now the wild story of the Cocaine Bear has been given the Hollywood thriller treatment and turned into a movie.

Soaring rents making life ‘unaffordable’ for private UK tenants, research shows
Exclusive: Findings come amid rising evictions, ‘price gouging’ claims and fears of homelessness emergency

Soaring rents have in effect made life unaffordable for private tenants across swathes of the UK, according to research undertaken for the Guardian.

The analysis shows asking rents on new listings are up by almost a third since 2019 – and some people are facing increases of up to 60%. Prices in 48 council areas are now classed by the Office for National Statistics as unaffordable when compared with average wages.

It comes amid warnings of a rising wave of evictions, allegations of “price gouging” by some landlords, and fears “the rental crisis is fast becoming a homelessness emergency”.

Michael Gove, the secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities, is facing growing calls to finally ban no-fault evictions, used by landlords seeking to raise rents, despite the government having pledged to do so since April 2019. Ministers also face demands to pay more in housing benefit to cover rising costs.

LastPass suffers another data breach, says customer data was stolen

LastPass has been breached for a second time this year.

LastPass has not disclosed further details about the breach. It is still investigating the scope of the incident to determine what user data was accessed.

Security incidents like these are the reason why some people prefer to use offline password managers like KeePass, because the only person who has access to your vault is you.

That said, if you have enabled 2-factor authentication for the accounts that you have stored in the cloud-based password manager, you should be relatively safe from attacks.
