Trains cancelled due to ‘very large’ tortoise on tracks in NorfolkA huge tortoise has caused “chaos” for rail passengers after finding its way on to train tracks in east England. The injured reptile was discovered in Norfolk at around midday on Monday, near Harling Road station. The tortoise forced trains to stop haring along the Breckland line, the region’s secondary railway route, which runs between Norwich and Cambridge. Two trains were terminated early and one was delayed, according to rail operator Greater Anglia, which said services resumed shortly before 1:30pm.One passenger travelling to Norwich, named Diane Akers, shared a photograph of the animal to Twitter just after midday, and said the animal was “still alive but in a bad way”.It is not currently clear how the tortoise found its way onto the tracks, or what condition it is in after being relocated.
Why the long face? Village in uproar as Patrick the pony mayor barred from pubOfficials from Torbay Council have decreed Patrick, recently proclaimed mayor of Cockington, Devon, is no longer allowed to visit his localWhy did the Devonian mayor have a long face? One answer is he found himself barred from his favourite pub; another is he’s a Shetland pony.Less than a fortnight ago, Patrick, the four-year-old pony, made history after he was proclaimed mayor of Cockington following a lighthearted campaign by villagers. But just a week later, celebrations were brought to an abrupt halt as officials from Torbay Council decreed Patrick was no longer allowed to visit the pub after a complaint was made. For the past two years, Patrick, who works as a therapy pony visiting recovery groups, hospitals and mental health wards, has been a regular at the Grade II listed Drum Inn.Such was his popularity in the Devonshire village, located in the heart of the English Riviera, that when the unofficial mayor of Cockington died, a petition was launched for Patrick to assume the role.Hundreds of people signed the petition and he was awarded the title at a special ceremony in the village on July 23.Now, however, the pony and his owners have been brought crashing down to earth as council enforcement officers told the pub they would need planning permission if Patrick wanted to continue grazing in the garden. They say that the land needs to be reclassified from “pub garden” to “official grazing land”.Torbay Conservative MP Kevin Foster, 43, described the council’s decision as “unbelievable”.
