International travel company TUI Group said on Tuesday, that Greek tourism is still strong and called on sector authorities and government officials to focus on maintaining the momentum and tapping into the needs of visitors to the country.

In Tuesday’s statement to the press, the Hannover-based company said the number of bookings to Greece were higher than last year, demonstrating that “Greece continues to be a very popular holiday destination”.

TUI added that despite the referendum and the extensive media coverage of the country, it expects a record number of arrivals in 2015, stressing that 56 percent of tourists visit Greece in the summer months between July and September.

The announcement concluded that Greece’s tourism is the driving force of the Greek economy, remaining stable and offering one in five jobs, while contributing approximately 30 billion euros to the country’s GDP.

That's great to hear. Maybe TUI could have a quick word with Frau Merkel and her european financial stomtroopers to leave the one viable source of income and employment in Greece at the moment well alone instead of trying to make them tax the arse of it in the middle of the tourist season !

Are bookings for Greece really on the rise?
Searches for flights to Greece up 16 per cent, says website, as tour operators claim there's never been a better time to go

While search trends may not necessarily correspond to bookings, the latest figures from GfK Ascent, the UK-based analyst, suggest that sales of package holidays to Greece for the period January 1-June 27 are up two per cent year-on-year.

It adds that the number of holidaymakers due to visit Greece in the week ending July 11 will be two per cent up on the same week in 2014; the number arriving in the week ending July 18 will be four per cent greater; while the following week will witness a five per cent rise.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary says Greek people need to stop drinking coffee and get back to work

The no-nonsense Ryanair boss said that the crisis-hit country cannot expect to escape austerity after borrowing billions and branded Alex Tsipras’ left-wing government “lunatics”.

Well, there we go! A lot of optimism and enthusiasm and the usual load of b*ll*x from Ryanair. If only things were as simple as O'Leary. I'm sure the Greek people would love the opportunity to go to work. Austerity measures took that hope away.

So, holiday in Hellas... but maybe don't fly Ryanair.

I would rather walk to Greece on my hands than have to use Ryanair and enrich that shithead O'Leary.

Some of the media is plugging Greece (or disguising ads as articles)... at least Kef gets a mention:

HATTA devises plan to draw visitors to Greece all year round

An action plan to attract tourists to Greece all year round has been named “Dodeka,” after the Greek word for 12, and has been drawn up by the Hellenic Association of Travel & Tourist Agencies (HATTA). It includes the creation of a route related to the 12 Gods of Olympus and the recreation of ancient Olympic sports.

The project foresees the creation of a route with sites linked to the 12 gods of ancient Greece. A tentative route, with sites located in Athens, Aegina, Naxos, Delos, Ancient Olympia, Dodona and Pella has already been drawn up. According to HATTA, the unique tourism project, which will breathe new life into lesser-visited destinations, is the first of its kind in Greece. An online platform will be created which will provide information about the monuments and places to be visited.

The project is also seen boosting athletic tourism by utilizing the Athens 2004 sites that are currently unexploited. In this context, HATTA plans to launch a program called “The Olympics Legends,” which will offer tourists the chance to participate in ancient Olympic sports.

Religious tourism will also be promoted, which HATTA believes is an area that has strong potential and could be further exploited in Greece.

Another section of the plan, titled, “Sky & Sea” refers to aviation and sailing activities.

Developing urban tourism in Athens and Thessaloniki has a special place in the plan. As part of this, participating tourism bodies will announce timely offers for the Christmas and New Year period.
