Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8858 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1289 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1174 USD   $1 USD = 0.8975 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6999 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5882 €UR

Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Mom cooks ‘beautiful’ family dinner — but discovers major error with her olive oil that ruins meal: ‘She’s so angry’

A delicious-looking meal a mother tirelessly crafted for her family was ruined after she mistakenly used one ingredient that spoiled the entire dish — shower gel.

Though the chicken dish sizzling on the stovetop in a creamy yellow sauce with cherry tomatoes appeared eatable at first glance — Jane grabbed a bottle of “Pure Greek Olive” that her mother used to whip up the homemade meal.

“Only after she finished, did we discover that it’s — shower gel,” Jane shared.

What her mother thought was normal olive oil turned out to be a $19 bottle of Korres Pure Greek Olive Oil scented shower gel.

Greece Offers Tax Cheats 50% Penalties Discounts, 10-Year Payment Plans

ATHENS – Trying again to reduce evasion with tax rates up to 45 percent making it difficult – or impossible in some cases – to pay obligations to the state, Greece’s New Democracy will cut in half how much must be paid, only for fines and surcharges.

That’s aimed at providing an incentive although the full amount for the debt must be covered, which could keep debtors owing huge amounts away from the scheme unless amnesty is brought.

Many of Greece’s rich evade taxes by putting their wealth into secret foreign bank accounts while even professionals such as doctors and lawyers declare incomes under 10,000 euros ($10,839) annually to escape rates among the European Union’s highest.

Greece raises wildfire alert amid early blazes

Greece on Sunday raised the wildfire alert level for several regions to "high risk" — the second-highest — after more than 70 forest fires were reported across the country on Saturday.

Although most were brought under control, one on the island of Crete was still burning on Sunday, the fire department said, adding that three people had been lightly injured in the blaze.

The raised alert comes as strong winds of up to 60 kph (37 mph) are expected until Tuesday in parts of Greece.

Platform opens for ENFIA tax payment

The Single Property Tax (ENFIA) pay slips for approximately 7.3 million property and business owners have been posted on the myAADE digital portal for the financial year 2024.

This year’s ENFIA dues are to be paid in up to 11 installments, with the first installment due on April 30 and the final installment set to be paid by February 28, 2025.

Overall, the rates are expected to remain the same as last year’s. Property owners who had their properties insured for natural disasters (earthquakes, fires, and floods) last year will pay less tax, while those who acquired properties in 2023 will pay more tax.

Property owners who identify errors or omissions in their pay statements have the opportunity to correct them by submitting an amending E9 declaration. This platform is scheduled to open in the next few days.

New secret tape reveals top Post Office lawyer was warned of 'wrongful' convictions decade ago

A secret recording obtained by ITV News reveals the Post Office’s most senior lawyer was warned by independent investigators more than a decade ago that it may have misled the courts and pressured sub-postmasters into “wrongful and unsafe” guilty pleas.

The recording was of a meeting held between the Post Office’s former General Counsel Chris Aujard and Second Sight forensic accountants Ian Henderson and Ron Warmington in December 2013.

It shows the two men presented a damning assessment of the Post Office’s conduct in its investigations and prosecutions of sub-postmasters, who they found were denied the right to defend themselves and forced into “courtroom step deals” with little choice but to plead guilty.

Greece will set up a national shelter network in response to woman’s slaying outside police station

Greece’s minister in charge of police announced plans Monday to set up a nationwide network of domestic violence shelters, days after the fatal stabbing of a woman outside a police station.

The April 2 killing of 28-year Kyriaki Griva occurred as she was seeking police protection from her ex-boyfriend. The man was arrested and taken into custody after the stabbing north of Athens that has refocused national attention on domestic violence.

Michalis Chrisochoidis, the minister for citizens’ protection, said Monday that shelters would be set up in every police precinct in Greece under a program that would be formally launched later this week.

More than 20 otter cubs rescued after flooded rivers wash their homes away

More than 20 otter cubs have been separated from their parents by heavy rainfall this year.

Sustained wet weather in January, February and March caused rivers across the country to burst their banks, forcing many otters to find drier ground.

Dave Webb, founder of the UK Wild Otter Trust in Umberleigh, Devon, said the charity had rescued 11 cubs in March alone.
