Kef fire risk 26/10/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8986 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1128 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.0893 USD   $1 USD = 0.9180 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7178 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5821 €UR
1 €UR = R21.2542 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0470 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ancient complex unearthed in central Athens

An ancient building complex with a courtyard and many rooms containing mosaics with geometric motifs has been brought to light during excavations conducted as part of the project to redevelop Vasilissis Olgas Avenue in central Athens.

Archaeological and historical evidence confirms that the building dates back to the 2nd century AD when the Roman emperor Hadrian took steps to expand the city to the east. The building underwent a second building phase in the 4th century AD.

Greece opens Maria Callas museum for a glimpse into opera diva’s life

From a sample of her hair to a blue velvet dress she wore after the memorable 1955 performance of Verdi’s La Traviata in Milan’s La Scala, visitors to Athens can now marvel at items belonging to opera diva Maria Callas in a new museum dedicated to the legendary soprano.

Housed in a three-storey neoclassical building in the heart of the capital, it opens its doors on Thursday and coincides with the influential singer’s 100th birthday on Dec. 2.

Passions run high even in local Greek football: almost at full-time of a cup match between Vlakhata-based A.O. Eikosimias Football Club and Sami FC the score was 4-3 in favour of Eikosima, in the fifth minute of extra time Sami were awarded a penalty and levelled the score at 4-4. A verbal altercation between the scorer and the goalie led to an Eikosima fan rushing on to the pitch and striking the Sami player.

Could mysterious film showing projections onto famous Beatles landmarks be teasing 'final' song?

A mysterious film has been released showing projections onto famous Beatles landmarks in Liverpool.

Exclusive footage given to ITV News Granada Reports by Universal Music, shows images of a cassette tape projected onto iconic Beatles sites like Strawberry Field, Penny Lane and even John Lennon's childhood home in Woolton.

A clip of a cassette tape has also been posted on the band's social page X, formerly known as Twitter, leading fans to speculate whether the band are potentially teasing the long-awaited release of their 'final' song.

In June, Sir Paul McCartney said artificial intelligence had been used to create "the last Beatles record", which, at the time, was "set to be released later this year".

The 80-year-old said technology was used to extract John Lennon’s voice from an old demo and "get it pure" for what he said will be the final song from the band.

Fury over higher air traffic charges after IT meltdown

Airlines have reacted with fury and warned passengers will face higher fares after the UK's aviation regulator increased air traffic control charges.

The costs, paid by airlines, come after a UK air traffic control meltdown in August which led to long flight delays and left thousands stranded.

The fee will rise from £47 to £64 per flight until 2027, representing an increase of around 43p per passenger.

Marble bust bought for £5 could earn Easter Ross town millions

A sculpture bought for £5 by a town council and later found propping open a shed door could be sold for almost £3m.

The marble bust of Highland landowner Sir John Gordon was made by French artist Edmé Bouchardon in 1728.

Invergordon Town Council bought the artwork in 1930, but it later disappeared before it was discovered on an industrial estate in 1998.

Online Safety Bill: divisive internet rules become law

After years of debate, the government's controversial Online Safety Bill, which aims to make the internet safer for children, has become law.

It seeks to force tech firms to take more responsibility for the content on their platforms.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said it "ensures the online safety of British society not only now, but for decades to come."

But critics have raised concerns about the implications for privacy.

It introduces new rules such as requiring pornography sites to stop children viewing content by checking ages.

Platforms will also need to show they are committed to removing illegal content including:

    child sexual abuse
    controlling or coercive behaviour
    extreme sexual violence
    illegal immigration and people smuggling
    promoting or facilitating suicide
    promoting self-harm
    animal cruelty
    selling illegal drugs or weapons
    terrorism

Other new offences have been created, including cyber-flashing - sending unsolicited sexual imagery online - and the sharing of "deepfake" pornography, where AI is used to insert someone's likeness into pornographic material.
