Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8959 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1161 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1023 USD   $1 USD = 0.9071 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.6972 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5892 €UR
1 €UR = R20.6093 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0485 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Britain's loneliest sheep in hiding after rehoming row

A row has broken out over plans to rehome Britain's loneliest sheep.

The ewe, now named Fiona, was rescued on Saturday after being stranded for more than two years at the foot of cliffs in the Scottish Highlands.

But an animal rights group says plans to rehome her to a farm park near Dumfries would make her a "spectacle".

Fiona is now a shorn sheep after her overgrown fleece was removed but remains in hiding after activists turned up at Dalscone Farm.

Wealth declarations from more than 1,000 politicians published online

The declarations of 1,034 politicians, in which they provide details about the origin of their wealth and assets, were made available on the Parliament’s website on Monday.

These declarations, commonly referred to as “pothen esches” in Greek, pertain to the financial assets of MPs, MEPs, and regional and local government officials. (MPs who were elected for the first time in the last legislative elections were not required to disclose their data.) They are designed to combat corruption and were published in their original form as submitted, without undergoing an audit.

Greeks Split Between Palestinians, Israel in Raging War With Hamas

While Greece’s conservative New Democracy government is standing solidly behind Israel in its war against Hamas terrorists, Greeks by a 3-1 margin are with the Palestinians, showing how sharp the division is over both sides battling.

A poll conducted by the marketing research firm MRB Hellas for TV Channel Open found that 30.9 percent were on the side of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip that Israel invaded after Hamas raids killed hundreds of civilians and children, and only 10.1 percent believe Israel is right.

Confounding the dilemma is that there was almost an even split among other respondents in placing blame between Israel – criticized for stifling Palestinian rights – and the terrorist surprise attacks.

Baby trafficking in Chania: Infant of “unknown parents” sold to an Australian woman

The trafficked babies were being sold for about 70.000 euros each.

The ring’s clientele included couples who could not conceive and individuals who wanted to raise a baby as single parents. To bypass the Greek legal adoption requirements, the latter would form virtual civil partnerships with women who were also involved in the ring as surrogate mothers, with whom they would later divorce.

The trafficking ring amassed huge profits through the scheme, to the extent that its heads established offshore companies to clean the ill-gotten gains.

Britain's loneliest sheep arrives in new 'forever home'

The sheep described as the loneliest in Britain is said to be settling in well to her new home.

The ewe, now named Fiona, was rescued on Saturday after being stranded for more than two years at the foot of cliffs in the Scottish Highlands.

A protest was staged at the weekend by an animal rights group over plans to move her to a farm park, near Dumfries.

But she arrived at Dalscone Farm "under cover of darkness" on Sunday and is said to be in good condition.

Saturday's rescue operation was led by professional shearer Cammy Wilson.

He told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland programme "I have never worked with a sheep as calm as she is. She has essentially had unlimited grass to eat for two years and she is what we would describe as fat in the sheep world. I am not sure if you are allowed to say that these days to sheep, but she didn't seem to be too offended."

Greece Plans to Hire 10,000 Doctors, Raise Salaries for Medical Staff

Doctors in Greece – those in public hospitals and the country’s health system long held down by low salaries, long hours and poor working conditions will see higher salaries and initiatives to keep them.

Health Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis told the state-run Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) that 10,000 more would also be hired to bolster hospitals where long waits in emergency rooms have seen fights break out.

Asked by ANA-MPA how the hiring of medical staff would be carried out, Chrysochoidis said that procedures would be digital, without sacrificing meritocracy, without offering details.

He said that hirings – which in Greece are often done through political favors – would be done objectively and include interviews.

Michelle Mone admits involvement with ‘VIP lane’ PPE company

Conservative peer Michelle Mone has acknowledged for the first time that she was involved with a company that was awarded government PPE contracts worth £200m during the Covid pandemic. Lady Mone’s husband, Douglas Barrowman, has also acknowledged for the first time that he was involved in the company, PPE Medpro.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) granted PPE Medpro two contracts in May and June 2020, near the start of the pandemic, to supply millions of face masks and sterile surgical gowns, for a total of £203m. The contracts were processed through the DHSC’s “VIP” high priority lane, which fast-tracked offers of PPE from companies with connections to the Conservative party or government.

Last November the Guardian reported that leaked HSBC bank documents indicated Barrowman was paid at least £65m from PPE Medpro’s profits, then transferred £29m into a trust for Mone and her three adult children.

The DHSC is suing PPE Medpro for the full return of the £122m it paid for the surgical gowns but never used, claiming they were unsafe for use in the NHS. The company is defending the claim.

The National Crime Agency is conducting an investigation into PPE Medpro, which is continuing. In a statement, an NCA spokesperson said: “The NCA opened an investigation in May 2021 into suspected criminal offences committed in the procurement of PPE contracts by PPE Medpro.”

Rents well below asking rates

The house price rally has inflated the expectations of rental property owners who are trying to maximize their monthly income. Comparing the prices asked in classified ads with those included in lease agreements, it turns out that the discrepancies are large.
