UK weather: Heatwave broke record for highest ever temperature, Met Office saysThe record for the highest temperature officially recorded in the UK was set last Thursday as a heatwave gripped the country, the Met Office has confirmed.A temperature of 38.7C was recorded at Cambridge Botanic Garden, exceeding the previous record of 38.5C set in Faversham, Kent, in August 2003.The figure was first announced as a provisional temperature on Friday and has now been validated by the Met Office observations team.
Parts of North Yorkshire and the West Midlands were hit with flash flooding this evening as the Met Office issued weather warnings for across the UK. People this evening reported cars being swept away, businesses flooding and bridges collapsing. Routes around Swaledale and Wensleydale were left impassable tonight due to the amount of water on the ground.Due to "intense downpours" a flood warning was put in place for Arkle Beck at Reeth and Low Fremington, the Environment Agency said, after a driver had to be rescued from the boot of their car near Reeth.It added that river levels were expected to "rise significantly overnight" and it was "monitoring the situation closely".
