Five tremors in 24 hours!Don't remember seeing that before!
A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of between 5.9 and 6.1 has hit the western Greek island of Kefalonia, just over a week after a similar quake damaged dozens of buildings across the island. The Athens Geodynamic Institute registered Monday's pre-dawn quake at 5.9, while the U.S. Geological Survey registered a 6.1-magnitude. It is common for different institutes to record slightly different figures. It was not immediately clear whether there was any damage or injuries.

Kefalonia Mayor Alexandros Parisis told Greek radio that the port at the town of Lixouri, the closest to the epicenter, had been seriously damaged and that minor injuries had been reported. He did not immediately have any further details. The Athens Geodynamic Institute registered the pre-dawn quake, which struck just after 5 a.m. local time with a magnitude of 5.7 and an epicenter 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northwest of the island's capital of Argostoli. The Athens institute had initially registered 5.9. The U.S. Geological Survey registered a 6.1-magnitude. It is common for institutes to register different figures and to revise their initial measurements.Earthquakes have been rattling the island constantly for the past week, after a 5.9-magnitude temblor struck the area on Jan. 26. Since then, thousands of residents have been spending nights with relatives or in ships sent for that reason.Kefalonia's mayor and seismologists urged people on the island to leave their houses temporarily. Parisis said he was trying to arrange a boat to head to Lixouri, but was being hampered by high winds in the area.
Deputy regional governor Antonis Kouris said there had been no reports so far of any serious injuries or home collapses. Authorities did not immediately have a clear picture of the situation in outlying villages on the island's mountains, and were expecting more information after first light."This is a critical time, people must be careful and remain calm," Kouris said.Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos told Greece's Skai television that Monday's earthquake appeared to be a strong aftershock to the Jan. 26 temblor, rather than an entirely unrelated quake."Initial data indicates it's the strongest aftershock until now. It's more to the west than the previous quakes, but the epicenter is still under the island," Papadopoulos said.Kefalonia's mayor and seismologists urged people on the island to leave their houses temporarily. Christos Kyrakatos, a resident of one of Kefalonia's villages, told Greek television that at least one person in his village had been taken away by ambulance after being injured by falling objects in his home. The power and water supply to the area had been cut, and residents who had fled their homes also had to cope with intense bad weather, with strong rain and low temperatures.

Ten people have sustained light injuries, mostly from falling objects, according to the director of Lixouri hospital, Dionysis Markatos.Monday morning's quake occurred at 5.08am. According to the Institute of Geodynamics in Athens, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 with its epicentre located 12km to the northwest of the island's capital, Argostoli, which corresponds to the same area near Lixori that was the focal point of last Sunday's quake."We're talking about the same seismic area. In fact, the centre of today's earthquake is just to the northwest of last Sunday's quake, 12km from Argostoli, near the shoreline," said institute director Dimitra Saplatzi. She said further earthquakes can be expected in the coming days, of the same magnitude and in the same area. While studies are ongoing, she added that she could not exclude the possibility of a tremor similar in magnitude of the devastating 7.2 earthquake the island experienced in 1953. Initial reports say that there have been landslides on the between Argostoli and Lixouri, already damaged from last week's quakes.Homes have also suffered damage. One resident in the village of Chavriata, outside Lixouri, told EnetEnglish that Monday's quake was the strongest yet this week. She said everything in her house had been thrown to the ground and that a crack had appeared in a wall of the building, which was constructed in the 1980s.Closed for the past week, the island's schools will remain shut at least until Wednesday, pending the completion of inspections on school buildings. The 6th disaster response unit (Emak) has been dispatched from Patras to the island, as has a firefighting team with rescue dogs.

The Greek armed forces are to implement an emergency plan reserved for natural disasters after a second large earthquake struck the Ionian island of Cephalonia on Monday. The Defkalion plan is being put into action after further damage on the island from the 5.7 Richter quake. At least 16 people were injured on Monday morning.A navy frigate is to transport machinery to the island, while an air force plane will fly a team of government officials to Cephalonia.

Scientists and authorities will remain on alert for a few more days due to the seismic activity and the island's seismic history. After Monday's quake, as aftershocks continue, seismologists appeared "more relieved" about the progress of the seismic activity in the Ionian Sea. According to experts, the pattern shows that the possibilities of a larger quake are decreasing.
Local officials on Cephalonia have approached film stars Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz about visiting the island, which was struck by a second strong earthquake in eight days on Monday.According to Ta New newspaper, Kekatos said he hoped they would accept and help give the island some positive publicity after the damage it suffered as a result of the two quakes and multiple aftershocks.
