Kef fire risk 21/06/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8828 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1261 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1328 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8880 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

The uneven course of tourism

Greek tourism destinations are moving at different speeds, with some areas even showing a decrease in arrivals from last year.

Athens is the protagonist so far this summer season – i.e. the one that started at the beginning of May, with arrivals from abroad increasing by 24.8% compared to last year and 9.1% compared to 2019. Rises have also been observed on Crete, Corfu, Rhodes, Skiathos, Kos, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Thessaloniki. On the contrary, Mykonos and Santorini are staring at decline: High prices, bad weather, short-term rentals, over-tourism and negative publicity are cited as unfavorable parameters for these destinations.

Conflicting news, I've heard tourism overall for Kef isn't as high as expected, fewer flights, flights not full... taverna owners crying tales of woe. Some folk just won't be happy until Kef is saturated with tourists.

Unconfirmed: a little gang of thugs who hang around in the centre of Argostoli of an evening last night in the early hours beat a fellow teenager to the extent he needed treatment at Argostoli hospital.

Large tourism project blocked on Paros

The Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court, has intervened against the way large tourism investments on small islands are approved. More specifically, it has blocked a plan for the creation of a large hotel unit, with a hotel and villas, on Paros, reprimanding implicitly but clearly the Central Town Planning and Disputes Council (KESYPOTHA), which accepted the proposed project without sufficient justification.

Release with Reporting Conditions: Two Teenagers Accused of Rape in Greece

Two 19-year-olds who were accused of raping a British woman and recording the act on their mobile phones in a Greek hotel have been released from custody. However, they have been ordered to report to the embassy in London every month while the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident occurred last week in Rethymno, on the Greek island of Crete, where the 24-year-old British woman alleged that the two teenagers assaulted her while intoxicated in a hotel room. According to her statement, the pair filmed the sexual assault after meeting at a bar earlier that night.

The woman claimed that they consumed alcohol together and later went to the hotel where the two men were staying. She said she woke up the next morning naked and disoriented, unaware of her whereabouts.

Both men were arrested and appeared in court on Monday. They were released with certain conditions and fines. While the Greek police detained the two teenagers on suspicion of rape, the 24-year-old woman underwent medical examinations.

Although the two individuals are now free to return home, they must report to the Greek Embassy in London monthly due to their restrictive conditions.

School that allowed child to identify as cat faces government investigation

A school at the centre of a row over children identifying as animals is facing a Government investigation, The Telegraph can reveal.

The Telegraph has revealed that at other schools teachers are allowing children to identify as horses, dinosaurs and even moons.

On Tuesday Downing Street told headteachers that they should not be teaching children that they can identify as cats or other animals.

A source close to Mrs Keegan said: “Teachers should not be teaching contested ideology as fact. They must have due regard to safeguarding if a pupil identifies as an animal.”

The Telegraph can reveal that teaching assistants at other schools are taking children who identify as horses out cantering and feeding strips of meat to those who consider themselves to be dinosaurs.

Deep Purple | Athens | July 7

The legendary English rock band will be joining the lineup of this year’s Rockwave Festival. Cited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest band, Deep Purple comprised one part of the “unholy trinity” of hard rock and metal music back in the 1970s, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Many rebelled with Deep Purple, others were raised on it, and no matter how many years go by, their relevance remains undying.

When we were there, the Taverna was closed, but his apartments were still being rented out, we heard from locals we know that he has said many times he is giving up the Taverna, it would seem he has done it this time! i think he is called Filiathis (spelling) another one that has closed is Faros taverna, he sold his new canopies to his brother who owns Soulatso giros, its at the end towards the entrance to the port offices.
in its place is a new upmarket taverna called The Cellar, when i saw on the menu wine starting at 55 euro my wallet started screaming and i had to walk away!

Might be Soulatso I go to when in Sami, it's down that end. Faros looked to have been around a while, too. Wonder what's going on in Sami? Got a couple of up-market restaurants in Poros now, thankfully still plenty of traditional Greek tavernas serving good food at decent prices.

Bye 'eck, I do miss gyros!

We always have a drive to Poros, simply because it is a pleasant scenic drive from Sami, we park on the open space to the right after coming over the bridge, we call for a brew and a sarnie at the first cafe opposite the council office, we then look at the shops near the seafront, then turn left and wander along as far as we can go, it always seems quiet through the day, so it suits us, but we have never had an evening meal there, always wondered how busy it was in the evening, we may decide to have a few days there in the future.

Aye, it's a lovely drive. The stretch between Ag Nikolaos - Pyrgi always reminds me of the Peak District, now the Peak District reminds me of Kef. If you like Sami and Ag Efimia you'll probably like Poros, it's pretty relaxed (and has plenty of beach). We were surprised how busy it was last September, first two weeks we had to go out around 22:00 to get a table anywhere, last two weeks it quietened down (and cooled down). If you're out there in May / June it probably won't be too busy. Enjoy!

Woke school slammed for asking pupils to pick from 42 pronouns including 'zie' and 've'
New Mills School in Derbyshire sparked outrage amongst concerned parents after asking 11-year-old kids to pick from 42 different pronouns before they joined.

A school in Derbyshire is asking its new intake of 11-year-old pupils to choose their gender and has handed out a list of 42 possible pronoun options. Parents looking to send their children to New Mills School in Derbyshire were sent an admissions form which allowed children to request to be referred to as zie, zim, zir, zis, zieself, as well as ve ver, vis, vers and verself, amongst others.

Macabre! Family mourning mother open coffin to find another woman inside!

Relatives mourning their loved one were left in shock when upon opening the coffin discovered that another woman had been placed inside.

The macabre incident occurred in Bodeika Achaia last Saturday when they removed the coffin lid.

The funeral parlour contacted the Rio hospital and, according to the family, the mix-up happened when the two bodies were confused due to synonymy at the morgue.

“Indeed the funeral home notified Rio and they said there is another Dimitropoulou at the morgue and they got the name wrong. My mother was Vasiliki and they sent us Niki,” says the 79-year-old daughter. Finally, the family found themselves at the morgue after the great commotion they went through and identified the body.

Keir Starmer: ‘Clearly ridiculous’ for children to self-identify as cats
Labour leader thinks ‘children should be told to identify as children’ as he wades into growing row

Sir Keir’s comments are the most outspoken by any party leader over the issue since The Telegraph revealed that two children were reprimanded by a teacher for questioning a classmate’s cat identity.
