New law could transfer control of unused buildings

Municipalities and private companies may soon get a chance to take over abandoned or empty buildings if a new bill drafted by the Environment Ministry is voted through Parliament.

According to the proposed law, the interested party can go to court to seek control of the property for 50 years. To do so, it must provide evidence that the building is abandoned, obtain a municipal council decision, warn the property owner, and describe the intended use.

Could think of one or two such buildings in Poros where only the lower unit of the building is in use and the rest is left as a grey concrete monstrosity ( the site of Zavras original taverna next to the Vohinas) and a certain upper floor in the square that has been unfinished for 28 years that I know of and prob a lot more ! Surely a little whitewash would not go amiss to smarten them up. Not suggesting they should be forced to complete but if you make and take your living from tourism a little collective responsibility is required from ALL concerned ? Not holding my breath though.......

Ugh, yep, abandoned concrete shells are pretty hideous. Even when finished, empty units aren't that attractive, yet more keep being erected.

Totally off topic but nevertheless quite interesting, an article on the BBC: What happened to England's abandoned mansions?

At least they have style (and aren't so bleedin' obvious).
