‘Don’t pay with QR codes – it might be a scam’, banks tell customers
Legitimate ‘quick response’ codes are being replaced with fraudulent versions

Drivers have been told not to use QR codes to pay for parking and electric car charging following a surge in payment scams.

Approximately 1,200 QR code scams have been investigated by Action Fraud since 2020, the national reporting centre for fraud, with more than 400 reported in 2023.

Transpennine Express removed all QR codes from its 14 station car parks in November 2023 following reports of fraudulent stickers covering the legitimate payment links.
