Kef fire risk 06/10/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8920 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0842 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1211 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9223 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Draft Law on Tax Evasion: What to Expect in Parliament this October

In a concerted effort to curb tax evasion, the Greek Parliament is gearing up for the submission of two crucial bills, the first of which is scheduled for this month. These legislative initiatives aim to harness the power of electronic tools and advanced technologies to combat tax evasion effectively. The impact of these tools has already been felt, with VAT revenues witnessing a substantial increase of 2 billion euros since 2019. This surge can be attributed primarily to electronic transactions, along with other innovative measures like electronic books and sophisticated data analysis methods that have exposed tax evaders who were previously slipping under the radar.

The second bill, currently under meticulous scrutiny by officials at the Ministry of Finance, focuses on the identification of professionals who declare incomes below 10,000 euros. Importantly, it should be noted that the Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kotsis Hatzidakis, has clarified that the tax rates for professionals will remain unchanged. Instead, a new system will be devised to identify those individuals who declare low incomes and effectively evade taxes.

Android October security update fixes zero-days exploited in attacks

Google has released the October 2023 security updates for Android, addressing 54 unique vulnerabilities, including two known to be actively exploited.

Android versions 10 and older are no longer supported, yet depending on the scope of some recently fixed vulnerabilities, they might also be impacted.

That said, users of older Android systems are recommended to upgrade to a newer model or flash their device with a third-party Android distribution that offers security updates for their models.

Iona the turtle's remarkable recovery, from death's door to being back in the wild

Turtle Iona was not expected to make it through the night when she was found washed up on a Scottish beach, “malnourished and dehydrated”.

But two years later, and 10 times heavier, she's been released back into the wild.

The reptile became the smallest live stranded loggerhead turtle recorded in the UK, after she was found in 10C water off the Scottish island of Iona – which she was named after – in January 2022.

Iona was relocated to Sea Life in Scarborough in May last year for further care before making her 1,700 mile voyage to the Azores in Portugal.

The loggerhead turtle was fitted with a satellite tag to allow researchers to monitor her behaviour in the wild.

Yet another exercise in futility.  The mayor-incumbent very kindly sent me two copies of a hilarious jokebook with his grinning phizog on the front yesterday.

Soaring cost of forest fires

The cost of forest fires in Greece will rise from 2.4 billion to 2.8 billion euros per year in the period 2023-2050, Scope Ratings said in a report.

The rating agency warned that if there is no government intervention, the burden will be borne by households, businesses and banks, with possible wider implications for lending in Greece.

The cost of fire damage in Europe amounted to €4.1 billion in the first nine months of 2023, with Greece suffering a cost of €1.66 billion.

The estimates include the costs of firefighting, reforestation, damage and cleanup, without even taking into account the effects on agricultural production and tourism.
