Adorable Bear Cub Saved by Locals in Greece

A three-month-old bear cub was saved by a local couple near Kozani in northern Greece after she was separated from her mother.

The little bear found refuge in the garden of Pavlos and Martha, who gave her temporary shelter, before they notified Kozani Forestry Service and “Arcturos,” a non-profit organization focusing on the protection of wildlife fauna and natural habitat.

Experts calmed down the terrified cub, giving it some food and water, and began searching for her mother in a wooded area near where she was found.

The cub was placed inside a makeshift structure, which could not escape, but it would be easy for the mother to get it out of there.

Unfortunately, this did not happen and so “Arctouros” picked up the bear again the next morning and took it to the Wildlife Reintroduction Center, where it will grow for a year and then it will try to re-integrate it into the wild.

Greece is currently home to an estimated population of 450 brown bears. The majority of these bears live in the mountainous regions of northern Greece, including the Pindos and Rhodope Mountains.

According to Fraport, Kef airport had a slow start to summer season 2024 with no arrivals in March and 3,825 in April. The total for these two months therefore being 3,825. In 2023 the total arrivals for March and April amounted to 5,083 pax. Fraport considers this another indication that the season (on Kef) continues to contract.

'Hero plumber' has citizen award rescinded

The man once dubbed the country's "kindest plumber” has had his British Citizen Award rescinded following a BBC investigation.

James Anderson, from Burnley, was given the accolade in 2023 for his work providing boilers and plumbing services for free.

The BBC revealed on Thursday that Mr Anderson's firm, Depher, a social enterprise, faked stories of helping people as it raised millions in donations.

A spokeswoman from the British Citizen Awards said information which had come to light about Mr Anderson's actions did not "align with our values".

The BBC found Depher used vulnerable people's photos without consent and claimed Mr Anderson had prevented an elderly woman from killing herself, but in fact she had died years earlier.

Mr Anderson denied some of the BBC's allegations but admitted: "I've made mistakes."

Social media stories made him a viral sensation during the UK’s cost-of-living crisis and the company brought in at least £2m in donations, according to a BBC analysis of his company accounts.

Among the donors were, reportedly, celebrities such as the singer Lily Allen and actor Hugh Grant, who gave £75,000.

How Greece’s 6-day Work Week will Operate from July 1st

A controversial Greek law that enables employers to compel their employees to work six days a week will kick in from this July 1.
The law was passed by the Greek Parliament with 158 out of 300 votes in the autumn of 2023, supported by New Democracy legislators.

At the time, the Greek government said that the country was incorporating an EU directive into national law, and that the move would provide greater flexibility to both employers and workers, meanwhile combatting undeclared work.

Article 25 of 5053/2023 says that full-time workers (those working 5 days per week for 8 hours per day), can start working a 6th day per week.

Specifically, workers can be compelled by their employers to work for a 6th day in exchange for an additional 40% of their daily wage.

Employers will also be able to offer new workers a six-month probationary period and fire them without compensation during the first year.

Moreover, they can call an employee into work on their day off with just a 24-hour notice.
