Train travel: From Athens-Thessaloniki in 3 1/2 hours!

Athens-Thessaloniki rail travel could take less than 3 1/2 hours by 2017 with a new plan presented that would allow trains to speed at over 160 km per hour. The new 7-km double tunnel created using the cut and cover method will be the second-largest railway pipe in Greece and one of the largest in the Balkans.

Ryanair Chief Commercial Officer David O’ Brien expressed objections to a decision by Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) to give the concession for Greece’s regional airports to the Fraport-Slentel consortium, saying this would make them more expensive and less attractive to travelers due to higher charges.

Just dump Man Haron Monis’ body at sea, Muslim leaders say

SYDNEY’S chief Islamic ­funeral director yesterday declared no Muslim funeral home would accept the body of terrorist Man Haron Monis and authorities should just dump his corpse at sea or “chuck him in the bloody shithouse”.

The 50-year-old extremist’s body remains in the morgue and is awaiting a complex ­autopsy. His body will be ­released before Christmas, but nobody has yet claimed it.

Mobile network hack means anyone can listen in on any mobile call

A weakness in the network that enables mobile phone calls means hackers can listen in on any call and find the location of users – and researchers are unclear about how much the vulnerability has already been used.

The flaws make use of a vulnerability in SS7, the global network that allows companies to send calls, texts and other services to each other, reports the Washington Post.

The flaws are actually functions that are supposed to be used for other purposes, like keeping calls connected as users as they drive down motorways, that hackers re-purposes to allow access to the calls themselves.

Using the vulnerabilities can give hackers access to callers locations and phone calls.

SS7, despite being still key to mobile phone’s functioning, was built in the 1980s and is still riddled with serious vulnerabilities. But because it is the foundation of mobile phone systems, even as company invest billions of pounds into new security and encryption techniques the problems will continue to exist.

The network is used worldwide meaning that hackers do not even need to be anywhere near users’ phones to break into them.
