Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8985 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1129 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1046 USD   $1 USD = 0.9053 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7324 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5772 €UR
1 €UR = R21.0729 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0474 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Greece’s Hellenic Seaplanes delays flight ops launch to 2Q24

Having taken delivery of its first Cessna (single turboprop) C208 amphibian from Textron Aviation in August, Greek start-up Hellenic Seaplanes (Athens) has pushed back its planned flight operations launch from the third quarter of 2023 to “starting from the tourist season of 2024.”

By then it hopes to receive a second and third seaplane of the same type as it works towards an ambition to ultimately operate the biggest seaplane network in Europe in addition to being the first company in Greece to offer hydroplane connections to and from the islands and mainland.

The fleet will also aim to cater to the needs of cruise travellers and cover offshore excursion needs.

Hm... some of the cruise ships accommodate 2000-3000 passengers, the Cessna C208 holds nine... they might need lots of 'planes.

UK inflation falls to 4.6%

Inflation fell to 4.6% in October, down from 6.7% in September, the Office for National Statistics has said - the lowest level for two years.

Lower gas and energy prices drove the fall, while food prices have seen little change.

Inflation is the rate at which prices rise.

The drop puts the government on track to meet its target to halve inflation by the end of the year.

Facebook’s new ad-free tier could end annoying consent pop-ups, but it could also put a price on your privacy

We have reached a key juncture in the debate about online privacy, following Meta’s recent decision to offer some users paid-for ad-free access to Facebook and Instagram. The time has come to decide how much we value keeping our data, tastes and whereabouts to ourselves.

The main and often only way that free-to-use online services such as Google, Facebook, Instagram or TikTok make money is by selling data about user preferences to advertisers.

Research shows that, whenever asked, people state that they value their private data a lot. In practice, when offered the choice, many of us give it away for a very low price in exchange for vague promises about privacy protection.

Whether this implies that we don’t value privacy, or that we don’t understand that we are giving it away for very cheap, is not clear.

EU to Digitalize Schengen Visa Application Procedures

The Council of the European Union adopted new rules on Monday that will allow people who plan to travel to the Schengen area to apply online for a visa.

The Schengen area is a zone of 27 European countries which have abolished many types of internal border controls.

The goal of the new rules is twofold: to make the visa application procedure more efficient and to improve the security of the Schengen area.

Official figures from Fraport show Mykonos received fewer visitors than in 2022, Santorini saw a very small increase overall increase of 0.5% while Kefalonia arrivals were up 5.3% on 2022. That's one of the lower increases for Fraport airports so won't please everyone but may help Kef retain its individuality.

Rocket launch from Shetland spaceport announced for next year

The timetable for what could be the first rocket launch from Shetland's SaxaVord spaceport has been set out.

German rocket firm Hylmpulse will attempt sub-orbital launches - flights that are not fast enough to stay in outer space - from August 2024.

Full orbital launches will take place from 2025, according to a letter signed by Hylmpulse and the spaceport.

The site has still to be approved by the Civil Aviation Authority but hopes to be commercially operational by 2030.

The spaceport is situated on the UK's most northerly inhabited island, home to fewer than 700 people.

Four other spaceports are planned for Scotland - Space Hub Sutherland in the Highlands, Spaceport 1 in the Western Isles, Prestwick Spaceport in South Ayrshire and Spaceport Machrihanish in Argyll.

Elsewhere in the UK, there is Spaceport Cornwall in south west England and plans for Spaceport Snowdonia in Wales.

Man fined nearly £20k after being caught in Lincolnshire using dogs to kills hares

A 60-year-old man who admitted using his dogs to hunt and kill hares in Lincolnshire has been fined more than £18,500.

Fred Holmes was caught on private land on Low Road in Crowland and arrested by officers on 13 November, following reports of hare coursing.

His three lurcher type dogs, his Citroen car and a thermal imaging device thought to be used to help him locate the hares, were all seized.

He was also banned from keeping dogs for 10 years, and made subject to a three-year criminal behaviour order which prevents him from entering any private land in Lincolnshire.

Greece hands down life sentences to 4 Britons for drug trafficking

A Greek court in the northern port city of Thessaloniki handed down life sentences to four Britons for trafficking cocaine, media reports said Wednesday.

The four, who were arrested in July 2022 in relation to 300 kilos (661 pounds) of the drug, were found guilty of being part of a criminal organization, as well as aggravated drug possession and trafficking, according to public broadcaster, ERT.

Each was fined €500,000 ($542,000), it added.

The case file said cocaine was imported to Greece through the port of Thessaloniki in a container carrying bananas from Colombia.

The four set up headquarters in a rented luxury villa in Thessaloniki and planned to smuggle cocaine to central and northern Europe and Australia.

Louvre acquires €24m painting originally destined for rubbish tip

A 13th-century painting found hanging over the kitchen stove of an elderly French woman and later sold for €24m (£21m) at auction has been acquired by the Louvre after a ban on its exportation.

The painting was heading for the rubbish tip during a house clearance when the owner’s family called in an expert to see if there was anything of value in the property. Thinking the work could be worth up to €400,000, the expert sent it to an art specialist in Paris who declared it to be a genuine Cimabue.

In 2019, the Louvre hoped to acquire the painting when it came up for auction, with an estimated value of between €4m-€6m. The museum lost out when the hammer came down on a record €19.5m bid, a total sale price of €24m with fees.

The original owner, who was in her 90s and had moved to a care home, was unable to enjoy the sudden windfall, having died two days after the auction.
