British nationals in Greece appear in court over 300kg cocaine destined for Australia, Europe The men – who can be named for the first time following the start of the case – were held in June 2022 after a dramatic raid by armed officers in scenes straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster.The four men – three of whom were brought under heavy security from Thessaloniki jail where they have been on remand - were named in court as Neil Jones, 46, Anthony Bennett, 49, John Ellis, 39, and Stephen Wray, 52, and all are from Liverpool.A fifth man – Ryan Ellis – also from Liverpool, is charged along with them, with drug trafficking and is currently in jail in Holland where Dutch authorities have refused to hand him over because of 'conditions in Greek jails', it emerged.Greek authorities say the arrest of the four men sparked a global manhunt for the ringleader of the gang, who has been dubbed a 'British Pablo Escobar' as he is the link between the Colombian cartels and a vast European network of traffickers.Footage released in June last year showed heavily armed officers raiding a luxury £1,700 a month villa 20 miles from Thessaloniki which was being used as a base for the men.They were held after 297kg of cocaine was found in a consignment of bananas that had arrived in the Greek port city last summer said to be worth £42 million.

A third of underground water is of poor qualityOver a third of Greece’s underground water is of poor quality, according to the 2022 annual report from the Hellenic Survey of Geology & Mineral Exploration (EAGME). The report identifies the main problems in the Aegean and coastal regions, where salinization of the aquifer is a prevalent concern. Additionally, rural areas such as Thessaly and Central Macedonia are affected by nitrate pollution from pesticides. In contrast, groundwater quality in northwestern Greece is rated as excellent.
British Airways pilot sacked after ‘snorting cocaine off topless woman’ before trying to fly planeA British Airways pilot has been sacked after he told a colleague he had taken cocaine off a woman’s bare breasts before attempting to embark on a long-haul flight.Mike Beaton, of Devon, is said to have told a stewardess about an alcohol and drug-fuelled night out in Johannesburg before his return to London.The stewardess reported him, and BA delayed the flight until an alternative pilot could be found.Mr Beaton was suspended and flown home as a passenger the following day before undergoing a drug test at Heathrow. Class A drugs were found in his system and he was sacked.
Greece, Saudi Arabia to look at linking their power gridsGreece and Saudi Arabia agreed on Wednesday to set up a jointly-owned company that will look at linking their power grids, taking the first step in their plan to supply Europe with cheaper green energy, the Greek energy ministry said.Greece has also agreed with Cyprus and Israel to build the world's longest and deepest underwater power cable to link their grids at a cost of about $900 million.
