Heat wave to get stronger, passing 40C mark in Athens next weekend

A heat wave that has seen temperatures in many parts of Greece shoot past the 35 Celsius mark will only get worse as the week wears on, meteorologists warned on Sunday.

According to Skai’s weather service, daytime highs in Athens will increase through the week to reach 41C next weekend.

Conditions will be somewhat more bearable in southern Greece and the islands, where temperatures will hover around 4-5 degrees Celsius below these levels.

The heatwave in Greece may rival 1987. Last time we had extreme temperatures was in 2007, which was followed by the Great Fire over many parts of Greece including Kefalonia.

Not sure it will go below zero on Kef (well, maybe atop Ainos) but it's looking pretty cool for a few days.

Rain, snow and strong winds expected from Wednesday

A new cold front is expected to hit Greece on Wednesday, bringing snow, gale-force northerly winds, storms and a significant drop in temperature, the National Meteorological Service (EMY) have forecasted.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection (GSCP) have issued a warning for all pertinent state services and all regions and municipalities in the country to be prepared to deal with any problems the severe weather may cause.

Citizens are advised to be vigilant and take measures to protect themselves from weather-related dangers. This includes wearing several layers of thin clothing rather than one very warm thick layer, as well as weather-appropriate shoes, and to avoid venturing out when conditions are particularly difficult.

In areas that are expected to experience heavy rainfall, storms and strong winds, citizens are advised:

to secure objects that could cause damage or injuries
make sure that the gutters of their houses are not obstructed
avoid crossing streams or torrents on foot or with their vehicles during and after a storm
to avoid working in the open or engaging in seaside or waterside activities
to take cover under a structure or inside a vehicle during a hail storm
to avoid walking under large trees or signboards and where objects could fall on the ground
to follow closely the instructions issued by authorities, such as the traffic police

Furthermore, in areas where snowfall and frost are predicted, people travelling with a car are advised:

to consult the weather forecast and get information on road conditions before setting out
to travel during the day and only if it is essential
    to always carry snow chains
to change their travel plans to avoid extreme weather phenomena
to inform their next of kin about the route they intend to take

April showers to come sweeping into Greece

April showers, along with some heavy storms, will be sweeping into Greece starting on Friday afternoon and lingering through the weekend, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) has said.

The wet front will come in from the southwest, hitting the Peloponnese and the western coast of the mainland first.

Most of the country will experience downpours and the occasional thunderstorm starting in the early hours of Saturday and extending through Sunday.

The NOA also warned of gale-force winds reaching up to 9 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea on Friday and over the weekend, as well as large concentrations of dust coming in from North Africa, mainly affecting southern parts of Greece.

Just had a short shower here this afternoon and the car is covered in sand spots. Hopefully we are due some heavy rain later so that will give it a good wash down.

The weather has a habit of 'making up for itself'. We have had the wettest April I have recorded and May has been very cool so far. High temperatures will be on the way!

Showers and storms forecast for election weekend

Rain clouds starting roling into Greece on Friday, putting a damper of plans by out-of-town voters to combine the ballot for local and regional government on Sunday with a weekend at the beach.

According to Greece's national weather service, storms are forecast in central parts of the country over the weekend, with downpours that are expected to be quite strong in the north.

The rest of Greece will see scattered, localized showers, while temperatures are also expected to dip from a current level in the high 20s or low 30s Celsius, starting in the Ionian.
