Kef fire risk 05/07/23: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8824 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1222 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1333 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8911 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Tories write out Boris and party as election leaflet fails to mention either in ex-PM’s former constituency

A Conservative by-election campaign leaflet has been branded "frankly embarrassing" for failing to mention the party or former prime minister Boris Johnson who previously held the seat.

Allegedly some regeneration of public areas in Skala has been undertaken by the municipality, not sure there's much that's vastly different.

Greece's Prime Minister Plans to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis plans to legalize same-sex marriage, a huge step forward for LGBTQ rights in a region where some conservative governments are cracking down on the community.

“Same-sex marriage will happen at some point and it’s part of our strategy,” Mitsotakis, a center-right politician, said Tuesday in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Athens. “Greek society is much more ready and mature.”

Hm, wonder what the Greek Orthodox church will say about that?  :papa:

Romanian firefighters, first of six teams expected, arrive in Greece for fire season

The Romanian unit will stay in Greece for two weeks, after which they will be replaced by another group of 40 military personnel.

A total of 200 firefighters from six countries – Bulgaria, France, Germany, Romania, Slovakia and Malta – will be in Greece in July and August to assist depleted local forces. It is the second year the program has been put into effect, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

More than 450 firefighters will be pre-positioned in France, Greece and Portugal coming from 11 different EU countries, the European Commission said earlier this year.

Summer holiday flights cost a third more than 2019 rates, new data shows

There's been a steep rise in the price of summer flights according to new figures given to ITV News.

On average, holiday flights are costing around a third above 2019 prices, with some popular destinations even higher.

One industry insider said that the after effects of Covid are one unexpected reason for the increased costs.

Today, Manchester Airport published new figures showing passenger numbers have almost tripled in the last 12 months, and bosses there expect it to reach pre-pandemic traffic levels within weeks. This summer's high demand for flights comes despite big increases in prices.

Damaged electric cars ‘quarantined’ over fears they will explode
Practice threatens to increase costs for insurance industry by more than £600m

Electric cars that sustain minor bumps are being kept 15 meters apart in repair yards over fears they might explode, adding to insurance bills.

Government guidelines recommend electric vehicles with damaged batteries should be “quarantined” from other vehicles due to the risk of battery fires. Damaged batteries pose a risk of “thermal runaway” where the energy stored in the battery releases rapidly, creating temperatures of up to 400C.

But the practice threatens to increase costs for the insurance industry by more than £600m, costs which ultimately could be passed onto drivers in increased premiums, according to a report by automotive risk firm Thatcham Research.

Could be a sign of the times and quicker (and slacker) than writing A Bulgarian national living in England - when you live in Greece, and probably anywhere else, you'll read things in the press such as Greeks to benefit from ....... I always wondered why Brits, Albanians, Romanians, etc, living and working in Greece wouldn't get equal treatment. Of course, it applied to pretty much all residents but the media didn't seem to acknowledge that not only Greeks live in Greece and contribute to its economy.

Little doubt that Mr Dimitrov is a bit of a prat, regardless of nationality / residence.
