Fresh warnings issued by officials after data showed supermarkets were doing little to eradicate the dangerous campylobacter chicken bug

In almost 7 per cent of cases, the bacteria were present on the outside packaging of fresh whole chickens.

Dr Andreas Karatzas, food microbiologist, University of Reading, said: "It is particularly concerning that so many chickens are being sold with bacteria on the outside of the packaging. This hugely increases the risk of cross-contamination to other food in your supermarket trolley or your fridge."

Absolutely amazing.  Last year they were so infected they told us not to wash them because it would spread round your kitchen.  Now we find out just touching the packaging can give us the bugs.  Why don't these producers get closed down.  Lose all your dosh and get sued.  That would change it overnight.
