Today’s bank rates:
Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8878 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0940 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1264 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9141 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

An Untouched Paradise in Greece Under Threat
A natural paradise is currently the focus of a long-running dispute between locals and developers, one full of surreal twists and turns.

A long-ish read and one with a distinct whiff of corruption about it.

Berlin's giant AquaDom aquarium containing 1,500 fish explodes

A giant aquarium containing a million litres of water in the lobby of the Radisson Blu in Berlin has burst, flooding the hotel and nearby streets.

The "AquaDom" - home to 1,500 tropical fish - is 14m high (46 ft) and was described as the largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium in the world.

Police said there had been "incredible maritime damage" and two people were injured by glass shards.

The aquarium contained more than 100 different species of fish.

Rabbit abandoned in Plymouth with note after its owner's relationship ended

A rabbit was left abandoned in its cage with a note explaining that her owner's relationship had ended.

Daisy the rabbit was left in freezing conditions with a note that read: "Daisy, Indoor-only rabbit litter trained. Beautiful. Sadly my relationship ended. Sorry."

She was taken in by staff at Woodside Animal Sanctuary in Elford Leigh, Plymouth, after a passer-by altered them about the freezing bunny. Daisy had to be put in a makeshift pen due to all the others being full.

Woodside Animal Sanctuary helps with 19 different species of pets with the rabbit section being full with a long waiting list.

Helen Lecointe, senior sanctuary manager, said “Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK, but sadly the most unwanted. We could fill our pens five times over.

Findings link children’s charity to financial crimes

The Anti-Money Laundering Authority has reportedly found serious indications of financial crimes by the management of children’s charity Ark of the World, which is under investigation over its finances amid accusations of sexual abuse of minor.

In its report, the authority stated, among other things, that there are indications the founder of the charity, Father Antonios Papanikolaou, his wife Stamatia Georganti, as well as two other individuals, are alleged to have committed criminal acts related to the Ark’s finances.

Checks carried out on accounts and properties revealed evidence of offenses such as money laundering, embezzlement and others.

Both Papanikolaou and his wife allegedly lived off funds from the charity, while at the same time the former is suspected of purchasing real estate.

Apple expands Emergency SOS via Satellite to iPhone 14 users in France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK

A user can open the Emergency SOS feature on their device, and point the phone at the sky, at the direction of a partner satellite that is passing by.

If you have an iPhone 14 and want to see how the feature works without actually calling rescue services, you can try a demo of it. Go to the Settings app > Emergency SOS section, and tap on the Demo, which guides you through the process.

The iPhone 14 also comes with crash detection, which is capable of detecting an impact of a car crash. When it detects a crash, it calls emergency services.

Presumably the demo tells you how to find a passing satellite to point it at?  :dunno:

Allegedly a phone scam on Kef, presumably other parts of Greece as well: advice is to ignore incoming calls from unknown foreign phone numbers.

The Pope Returns Vatican’s Parthenon Marbles to Greece

Pope Francis has decided to send back to Greece the three fragments of Parthenon Marbles that the Vatican Museums have held for centuries, the Vatican announced Friday.

The Vatican termed the gesture a “donation” from the pope to His Beatitude Ieronymos II, the Orthodox Christian archbishop of Athens and all Greece, “as a concrete sign of his sincere desire to follow in the ecumenical path of truth.”

The Vatican thus becomes the latest Western state to return its fragments of the Parthenon marbles, leaving the British Museum among the holdouts.

Amazon Coventry warehouse staff vote to strike over 50p per hour pay rise in UK first

Amazon workers have voted to go on strike for the first time ever in the UK after a ballot at one of the company's vast warehouses in Coventry.

The walkout is likely to take place in January after staff reacted angrily to a 50p per hour pay rise in the summer - equivalent to 5% and well below inflation.

But Amazon said the vote had been held among a tiny proportion of the tens of thousands of workers in the UK and would not disrupt any deliveries.

The ballot, which was held among around 300 workers in the Coventry warehouse, saw a 63% turnout - so well above the necessary threshold, with 98% voting to strike. Although it is small, it is unprecedented for this tech giant in the UK.

Amazon has also been criticised for a high number of ambulance call-outs to its sites. A freedom of information request by GMB found that ambulances were called to the Coventry site 59 times between September 2018 and October 2021 for reasons including burns and traumatic injuries.

There was a separate FOI linked to the company's warehouse in Rugeley that suggested over three years ambulances were called to the Amazon warehouse 108 times, while they were called to a similar-sized Tesco warehouse only eight times.

‘I feel swaddled, protected’: testing out Prada’s £700 white vest

Fancy paying £700 for a sleeveless vest? An undershirt? Or, if we want to get to the taboo nitty-gritty, a “wife beater”? Even on Prada’s terms, the Italian fashion brand for the ludicrously loaded is surely taking the sartorial piss here.

I can’t believe it’s not … cheaper than 50 quid: the UK’s poshest butter
Even among the soaring cost of spreads, one offering stands out, priced at £55 – or £105 with a dish

It has long been a kitchen staple in Britain but with prices soaring, butter is fast becoming a luxury item.

Now an unsavoury milestone has been passed, with a 150g block arriving on shop shelves with a price tag of more than £50.
