Kef fire risk 22/07/23: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8953 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1533 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1169 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8671 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Investigation ordered into animal shelter fire deaths

A prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the death of animals at a private shelter in Lagonissi, in southeastern Attica, following an extensive fire in the region.

The fire broke out at nearby Neos Kouvaras on Monday and spread to other areas of southeastern Attica, leading to the death of several cats and dogs at the shelter.

The investigation will examine the accommodation at the shelter for animals and who was present to help save animals.

According to reports, the only animals to survive at the specific shelter were seven puppies and a cat, following a call for volunteers to help evacuate the animals.

Greece's first heatwave victim was uninsured and working double shifts

Uninsured and working double shifts in the heat, a 46-year-old food delivery driver died of heat stroke in Chalkida. He died after returning home from the grill house where he worked.

He felt very unwell with a headache and fever, collapsed and then died.

The delivery driver was known to the shopkeepers of Chalkida and as reported on Proto Thema, he worked in a grill, often made deliveries with his bicycle and was exposed for hours to temperatures exceeding 40 degrees because he needed the work and the money.

The owner of the grill in Chalkida, who was arrested for manslaughter after the death of the unfortunate 46-year-old, was released after his testimony.

As it emerged from the police investigation, the man worked yesterday Thursday as a distributor at the grill of the arrested person - without a relevant employment contract - from morning until noon.

Woman found dead in Pangrati with injuries from dog bites

A 60-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment in central Athens early Saturday morning, bearing wounds from dog bites on her face, state-run broadcaster ERT reported.

The woman was found by her son, who returned hole shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday and notified the police. ERT reported that officers found two pit-bulls in the house, owned by the woman’s son.

An autopsy is expected to shed light on the exact causes of her death, as it was not clear whether the victim died after being attacked by the animals or other reasons.

Her son is facing charges of exposing a person to danger.
